Strengthening mathematics education is an investment in the Maldives' future prosperity, resilience and progress: First Lady09 July 2026

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has highlighted that strengthening mathematics education is not merely an educational goal, but an investment in the Maldives' future prosperity, resilience and progress.

She made the remarks at the launch of Mathematical Thinking in the Maldives: Ethnomathematics, Cultural Heritage, and Curriculum Integration, a publication exploring the integration of Maldivian cultural heritage into mathematics education. The ceremony was held this morning at the Maldives National University (MNU).

Addressing the ceremony, the First Lady said the publication demonstrates that mathematics extends beyond classrooms and textbooks, illustrating how mathematical thinking has long been embedded in Maldivian culture and everyday life. She noted that traditional practices such as fishing, boatbuilding, navigation, weaving, agriculture and construction embody mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills.

The First Lady stated that connecting mathematics with culture and real-life experiences makes learning more meaningful, engaging and relevant for students. She added that when learners see their own culture reflected in education, they develop greater confidence, a stronger interest in learning, and a deeper appreciation of mathematics.

She also noted that the publication makes an important contribution to preserving Maldivian cultural heritage by documenting traditional knowledge passed down through generations. She emphasised that safeguarding such knowledge strengthens national identity while supporting education, research and national development.

Highlighting the importance of fostering greater interest in mathematics, particularly among young people, the First Lady said strong mathematical skills are essential for innovation, technological advancement and sustainable national development. She expressed hope that the publication would inspire educators, students and researchers to further explore the rich knowledge embedded within Maldivian communities.

Authored by Dr Aishath Shehenaz Adam, Vice Chancellor of the Maldives National University, the publication contributes to research on ethnomathematics and examines how Maldivian cultural heritage can enrich mathematics education and curriculum development in the Maldives.
