CEREMONY TO ASSENT THE SEYCHELLES BROADCASTING CORPORATION (SBC) ACT, 2026-REMARKS BY THE VICE PRESIDENT

09 July 2026 | Information Communications Technology.

It is a profound privilege to stand before you today, as we mark a defining moment in the history of public broadcasting in our nation. We have just witnessed the assent of the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation Act, 2026, a piece of legislation conceived with great care, deliberated upon with diligence, and shaped by the voices of our National Assembly on behalf of every Seychellois it is destined to serve. For more than three decades, the SBC has been the very voice of our islands, carrying the news of the day into every homes.  It has informed us in moments of celebration and sustained us through moments of crisis. It has preserved and carried forward our culture, our music, and our stories, to every corner of our nation and far beyond our shores. Few institutions touch the daily life of our people as intimately as our national broadcaster does. This Act has come into being through diligent and thoughtful deliberations, and it is anchored in a principle we hold most dear, the separation of powers, and an abiding respect for the autonomy of all our institutions. It confers upon the SBC a clear and unambiguous mandate in the discharge of its functions, comprehensive in its coverage, independent in its operation, and firmly rooted in our three national languages: Creol, English, and French. It is a mandate that speaks to the very essence of who we are as a people.   It calls upon our broadcaster to nurture creative talent, to reach every age group within our society, and to host the calibre of debate and national dialogue that truly serves the public interest.  It calls upon the SBC to champion sport, and to take deliberate and meaningful steps to safeguard the children within our community. These stand among the principal benefits this new law confers. A mandate that, in encapsulating the full breadth of the Corporation's functions, equips it to serve every Seychellois for generations to come. What we witness today is our Constitution at work. The Legislature debating and enacting on behalf of the people, and the Executive giving force to that collective will. This is a moment that belongs not to any single office, but to the nation, and to the institution that has, for a generation, faithfully archived and told our story back to us.As Minister of Information, I extend my deepest gratitude to the President for his vision and unwavering support, and to all the partners whose dedication has brought this new law to fruition.   May our national broadcaster continue, in this new chapter of its history, to inform, to educate, and to unite the people of Seychelles.Thank you.

This is a moment that belongs not to any single office, but to the nation, and to the institution that has, for a generation, faithfully archived and told our story back to us.

As Minister of Information, I extend my deepest gratitude to the President for his vision and unwavering support, and to all the partners whose dedication has brought this new law to fruition.   May our national broadcaster continue, in this new chapter of its history, to inform, to educate, and to unite the people of Seychelles.
