Presidente Abinader entrega Medalla al Mérito Magisterial 2026
Santo Domingo.- As part of his commitment to strengthening Dominican education, President Luis Abinader presented this Wednesday the 2026 Medal of Teaching Merit, in the categories of Encouragement, Recognition and Honor, to exemplary teachers, in recognition of their outstanding professional career, the transformative impact of their pedagogical work and their dedication to the training of new generations.
The event, held in the Las Cariátides Hall of the National Palace, was attended by the first lady Raquel Arbaje; the Administrative Ministers of the Presidency, Andrés Bautista; of Education, Luis Miguel De Camps, and of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Rafael Santos Badía, as well as rectors of universities and higher education institutes.
During his intervention, the Minister of Education, Luis Miguel De Camps, stated that the transformation of the Dominican educational system begins with the recognition of those who make teaching possible every day and highlighted the support of President Luis Abinaderal for the national teaching profession.
"Today we are not only brought together by the delivery of a distinction. We are brought together by the recognition of a vocation that has accompanied the growth of entire generations of Dominicans and that, from the discretion of a classroom, has contributed to building the country that we are today," said De Camps.
The official maintained that behind every success story there is a teacher who believed in the potential of his students before they did themselves. “Almost always, behind a life that manages to fully develop, there was a teacher who decided to believe in a person before they believed in themselves,” he stated.
De Camps defined education as the process of discovering talents, awakening vocations and strengthening the character of children and young people, while ensuring that teaching excellence is built with perseverance and commitment. Likewise, he highlighted that President Abinader has promoted a policy aimed at dignifying the work of teachers.
A president who recognizes the value of those who educate for the future
"President Luis Abinader has insisted that educational transformation begins by recognizing the value of those who make it possible every day. That conviction has guided the work we have been doing," he said.
The minister explained that, during his tours of educational centers in the country, he has confirmed the commitment of thousands of teachers who face difficulties with creativity and a vocation for service. He added that recognizing educators also represents a statement about the model of nation that the Dominican Republic aspires to build.
“A society that recognizes its teachers is saying that it believes in knowledge, that it values effort and that understands that the opportunities of the new generations begin when a child finds in front of him a teacher who teaches him to read, to think, to ask and, above all, to discover everything he can become,” he expressed.
In conclusion, he stated that nations leave a lasting mark when they invest in the talent of their people from the classrooms. “Behind each generation that advances, there will always be teachers who discovered the talent of those who would end up building the future of our country,” he concluded.
In this edition, the Salomé Ureña de Henríquez Encouragement Award, corresponding to the Bronze Medal, was awarded to teacher Nathalie Elianna García García, from Regional 07 of San Francisco de Macorís.
The Eugenio María de Hostos Recognition Award, distinguished with the Silver Medal, went to teacher Yahaira Constanza Rosario de Hernández, also from Regional 07.
The highest award, the Pedro Henríquez Ureña Honor Award, represented by the Gold Medal, was awarded to maestro Arquímedes Jerez de la Cruz, from Regional 16 of Cotuí.
Likewise, Dominican teachers residing in the United States Fiordaliza Ippolito, Yalisa Garibaldi and Lisette Parra received special recognition.
Santos Badía highlights the legacy of teachers and support of President Abinader
For his part, the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Rafael Santos Badía, highlighted the career of the ten distinguished teachers and affirmed that they represent the academic excellence of the country.
“The teachers that we recognize today are researchers, professors of high merit and experts in different areas of knowledge,” he said, after noting that among the winners are specialists in geopolitics, international politics and agricultural research.
Likewise, he recognized the work of the jury in charge of the selection, explaining that the quality of the candidates made the process especially difficult. “There were many who could be awarded today, there were even two ties with people who had the same merits,” he indicated.
Santos Badía also praised the management of President Luis Abinader, and assured that his greatest legacy will be the transformation of Dominican education. “Everything in life happens: power, fame, youth, but the most important thing is to leave a legacy, and you are leaving a legacy for Dominican youth.”
The official explained that, after a consultation carried out in the ten regions of the country, the Government is working on the development of a new legal framework and a curricular transformation that will prepare citizens for the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Education needs support, not criticism
Representing the award-winning teachers, Arquímedes Jerez de la Cruz stated that the distinction symbolizes the collective effort of the Dominican teaching profession and reiterated that education constitutes the basis for building the future of the country. “With all humility I receive this award not as a personal achievement, but as recognition of the collective effort of all teachers,” he expressed, dedicating the distinction to the teachers, students and families who are part of the educational system.
Jerez maintained that being a teacher “is much more than keeping a schedule, it is holding the future in your hands,” highlighting that the teacher's mission consists of helping students discover their purpose and strengthen their dignity.
He also defended the teaching profession against criticism and assured that “education does not need discredit, it needs support.” In this context, he highlighted advances such as the strengthening of the National Student Transportation System (TRAE), the continuous training of teachers and the incorporation of robotics and the STEM approach in the classrooms.
In addition, he recognized the support of President Luis Abinader, considering that it has been “key for us to build this dignification of the teaching profession today,” and valued the management of Luis Miguel De Camps for keeping the channels of dialogue open with the Dominican Association of Teachers (ADP).
Higher education recognizes ten outstanding teachers
During the ceremony, ten professors were also recognized with the Annual Award for Teaching Excellence from Higher Education Institutions, for their academic career, their contributions to research and their commitment to the training of professionals.
The awards were awarded to Dr. Leyda Mercedes Brea Sención, from the Pontifical Catholic University Mother and Teacher (PUCMM); Brigadier General and Doctor Ambiorix de Jesús Cepeda Hernández, from the National University for Defense (Unade); to the master engineer Yenny Altagracia Rodríguez de Estepan, from the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University (UNPHU); to teacher Iván Ernesto Gatón Rosa, from the Institute of Higher Education in Diplomatic and Consular Training Dr. Eduardo Latorre Rodríguez; to Dr. Reyna María Ysabel Hiraldo Trejo, from the Open University for Adults (UAPA); to Dr. Eunice Esmirna Abreu de García, from the Federico Henríquez Ureña University (UFHEC); to Mr. Herminio Vásquez de los Santos, from the Technological University of Cibao Oriental (Uteco); alDr. José Rafael Torres Valdez, from the Arturo de Meriño Agroforestry University (Uafam); alDr. Nelson José Abreu Ventura, from the Universidad Católica Nordestana (UCNE), and Dr. Yanilka Yulisa Alcántara de Tejada, from the ISA University (Unisa).
Artificial intelligence will not replace the teacher
Representing the recognized teachers at the higher level, Leyda Mercedes Brea Sención stated that the award constitutes a tribute to those who dedicate their lives to training the people who will promote the country's transformations.
In thanking him for the distinction, he recalled the influence of his mother, who taught as a teacher for more than four decades, and assured that over time he understood that “there is no greater construction project than that of the future of human beings.” Likewise, he highlighted that classrooms are spaces to promote equity, critical thinking and the training of citizens committed to their environment.
Brea Sención also addressed the challenges facing education in the digital age and stated that, although tools such as artificial intelligence expand the possibilities of learning, “it can never replace the essence of the educational act: the ability to inspire and train people.”
He added that teachers will continue to be “indispensable and irreplaceable” because they are the ones who guide knowledge from ethical principles and train those who will ask the questions that will change history.
The ceremony served to highlight the commitment of the Dominican Government to the dignity of the teaching profession at all educational levels, as well as to underline the strategic role of teachers in the transformation of the national educational system.
