Lebanese military court approves release of singer Fadel Shaker

Beirut, July 8 (SANA)A Lebanese military court has approved the release of singer Fadel Shaker in four security-related cases filed against him, including the high-profile Abra case, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency.

The Permanent Military Court, headed by Brig. Gen. Wassim Fayyad, approved Shaker’s release in the four cases.

The court ordered his release in three of the cases upon payment of bail. The files were then referred to Government Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Claude Ghanem, who approved the decision, while continuing to review the Abra case to determine whether he will appeal.

Shaker surrendered to the Lebanese army in April last year at the entrance to the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon in connection with the 2013 clashes in the Abra area near Sidon.

In May, Shaker was acquitted in a separate case.

Since the start of the Syrian revolution in 2011, Shaker publicly expressed his support for the uprising, describing it as a legitimate revolution against the ousted regime and condemning its actions. He was among the first Arab artists to publicly back the revolution before announcing his retirement from music and dedicating his voice and public profile to humanitarian causes and support for the Syrian revolution.F.J./M.Z.
