Qatar says Syria’s progress with OPCW qualifies it to regain organization rights
The Hague, July 8 (SANA)Qatar said Syria’s progress in cooperating withthe Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons(OPCW) qualifies it to have its rights and privileges within the organization restored.Speaking during the 112th session of theOPCW Executive Councilin The Hague, Qatar’s representative to the organization, Mutlaq bin Majed Al Qahtani, welcomed the ongoing coordination between Syria and the OPCW Technical Secretariat, according to the Qatar News Agency (QNA).Al Qahtani said the progress made by Syria justifies restoring its rights and privileges within the OPCW, adding that such a step would strengthen regional security and reinforce the organization’s credibility.He reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to supporting the OPCW’s efforts to implement theChemical Weapons Conventionand promote international peace and security.The Qatari representative said dialogue and the peaceful settlement of disputes remain the most effective means of preserving security and stability, calling for intensified international efforts to foster an environment conducive to dialogue in accordance with international law.He also expressed concern over the continuing war between Russia and Ukraine and its humanitarian and security consequences, while reiterating Qatar’s rejection of the use or threat of use of chemical weapons under any circumstances.In May,Syria’s Permanent Mission to the OPCWsaid investigations by the relevant authorities had identified sites linked to the deposed regime’s chemical weapons program and uncovered munitions, materials used in the production of sarin gas, as well as mixing and storage equipment.On Nov. 20, 2025, Syria’s Foreign Ministry reactivated the country’s permanent mission to the OPCW in The Hague. On Nov. 28, the Conference of the States Parties authorized the organization’s Executive Council to review the decision suspending Syria’s rights and privileges within the OPCW.
