Mivhed inicia en Peravia la construcción de un Centro de Corrección y Rehabilitación para 800 privados de libertad

Bani. - The Minister of Housing, Habitat and Buildings (Mivhed), Víctor “Ito” Bisonó, began the construction of the Correction and Rehabilitation Center (CCR) of Matanzas-Las Tablas, in Baní, Peravia province.

In this new CCR, which will generate hundreds of jobs in the province, those deprived of liberty will not only have a decent space in which to serve their criminal sentence, but also a place where they can be rehabilitated and reintegrated into Dominican society.

During the ceremony to begin the work, Minister Bison said that reform of the penitentiary system promoted by the Dominican Government led by President Luis Abinader also requires a profound transformation of the infrastructure.

"Because whoever has committed a crime must answer to justice, but the State also has the responsibility of creating the conditions so that that person can study, learn a trade, develop discipline and, when they serve their sentence, return to society with greater opportunities to reintegrate. That is exactly what begins today and here," the official stressed.

For his part, the general director of Penitentiary and Correctional Services, Roberto Santana, highlighted the security and tranquility this new CC Rentoda will provide in the Peravia province.

“This center is well located because it will not make the population uneasy and, as the new penitentiary model establishes, those deprived of liberty will work,” said Santana.

The new CCR of Matanzas includes an infrastructure designed to house up to 800 inmates, with a construction area of 24,283.80 square meters within a plot of 80,000 square meters.

The project includes spaces for security, rehabilitation and training of prisoners, with accommodation buildings, maximum and medium security cells, administrative areas, classrooms, library, dining room, workshops and conjugal cells.

The project will also have areas for productive and recreational activities, including basketball courts, a farm for raising rabbits and chickens, an agricultural area, and a detail shed, as part of the social reintegration approach.

In terms of security, the center will have a sentry box, six surveillance towers, a customs area, a garbage shed, a power plant, a cistern and complementary service areas.

The facility will also have 96 parking spaces, distributed between general and private spaces, service areas and buses, to facilitate the operation of the penitentiary center.

With this infrastructure, the Dominican penitentiary system seeks to expand its installed capacity and strengthen a model based on the correction, education and rehabilitation of people deprived of liberty.

This new center joins six other CCRs started by Minister Ito Bisonó, located in Bonao, Hato Mayor, Cotuí, Santiago Rodríguez, Anamuya and El Seibo.

In the coming weeks, the Mivhe will launch the CCRs of Pedernales, Bahoruco, Barahona, among others, to continue strengthening the prison system of the Dominican Republic.

Minister ItoBisonówas accompanied by the governor of Peravia, Ángela Báez; the senator of Peravia, Julito Encarnación; the final mayor of Baní, Santos Ramírez, and the mayor of Matanzas, Raúl Batista, in addition to councilors and authorities from the province.
