Presidente Abinader inaugura el nuevo Centro UASD Santiago Rodríguez, 47 años después de la creación de la extensión universitaria en la provincia
Santiago Rodríguez.–Forty-seven years after the creation of the university extension of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) in this province, President Luis Abinader inaugurated this Sunday the new UASD Santiago Rodríguez Center, a modern infrastructure that will expand access to higher education for thousands of young people from the Northwest Line, thereby reducing the need to move to other districts to pursue university studies.
The modern infrastructure, built by the Ministry of Housing, Habitat and Buildings (Mivhed), with an investment of RD 737 million, will have capacity for 1,026 students and strengthens access to higher education on the Northwest Line, as part of the Government's plan to strengthen educational infrastructure and decentralize public higher education.
During the event, President Luis Abinader, accompanied by the Minister of Housing, Habitat and Buildings, Víctor "Ito" Bisonó, stated that the expansion of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) responds to the commitment to guarantee that no young person sees their access to higher education limited for economic reasons or by the need to move to another province.
The president recalled that the UASD university center in Santiago Rodríguez was a project promoted for years by community leaders and young people of the province, who maintained a constant defense of the initiative until it became a reality.
The president explained that the decentralization of higher education allows students to remain in their communities while they pursue their degrees, avoiding the costs of transportation, accommodation and maintenance involved in studying outside their place of origin. He indicated that this policy also contributes to reducing the internal migration of young people to large cities and strengthens the development of the provinces.
President Abinader announced that the Government will continue to expand the presence of the UASD in the country, noting that new facilities were recently delivered in Dajabón and that the creation of a large university center for the Northwest region, with a presence in Montecristi and other provinces, is being evaluated. He maintained that this strategy has contributed to decongesting the university's headquarters and improving teaching conditions through smaller groups of students.
The head of state urged students and university authorities to take advantage of the new facilities, protect them and convert them into a space dedicated not only to teaching, but also to research, culture and the arts. He pointed out that the venue's auditorium should serve for academic, theatrical and cultural activities that strengthen the intellectual life of the province, while calling for the development of research aimed at solving the main challenges of the communities in the region.
Minister Ito Bisonó highlights the impact of the work
During his speech, Minister Ito Bisonó stated that the new center represents much more than an educational infrastructure, becoming a tool to expand opportunities, promote social mobility and contribute to the development of Santiago Rodríguez and the entire Northwest Line.
He said that with this delivery, President Abinader's government added six UASD regional centers built through Mivhed, consolidating a strategy aimed at expanding the coverage of public higher education and promoting the development of the provinces.
"The most important thing is that we are not delivering a building for some day; we are delivering a fully equipped university. The classrooms have all the necessary furniture, the auditorium is ready to come into operation and each of these spaces was conceived to serve this community from day one," he said.
The official pointed out that President Abinader's vision has been to bring public investments closer to communities that for decades faced greater limitations, executing works that directly impact the quality of life of the population and strengthen the development of the provinces.
Likewise, he recognized the leadership of the rector of the UASD, Editrudis Beltrán Crisóstomo, for promoting the expansion of the state university to the different regions of the country.
"I must confess that working with Maestro Beltrán always had something very particular. One arrived thinking that the conversation was about a specific work and almost always ended up leaving with two or three more committed projects. While we were talking about a delivery, another need of the university appeared and, with his ability to enthuse those around him, he would say: 'Minister, since we are here...'", he stated.
Recognition to rector Editrudis Beltrán for his outstanding work at the head of the UASD
Within the framework of the event, Minister Bisonó presented recognition to the rector Editrudis Beltrán Crisóstomo for his outstanding work at the head of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, his permanent willingness to collaborate with the Mivhed and the joint work developed between both institutions to strengthen the university infrastructure and expand access to higher education throughout the national territory.
Rector Editrudis Beltrán highlights transformation of the UASD and support from the Government
Addressing those present, the rector Editrudis Beltrán Crisóstomo assured that the management he led marked a before and after in the history of the academy, by transforming the relationship between the state university and the Government to benefit the development of the country.
During his speech, he stated that the expansion of the UASD in the last four years made it possible to bring free higher education to thousands of young people through the opening of new university centers in different provinces.
Beltrán highlighted that during his administration the university went from seven to thirteen university cities, with new campuses in Baní, Azua, Hato Mayor, Cotuí, Neiba and now Santiago Rodríguez. Likewise, he indicated that the network of experimental high schools increased from one to 16, reaching an approximate enrollment of 7,000 students.
The rector maintained that this expansion responds to the Government's commitment to guarantee that every 40 kilometers there is a higher or technical training center, strengthening the development of communities and expanding opportunities for youth.
When referring to Santiago Rodríguez, he recalled that the presence of the UASD in the province began on April 4, 1979 as an extension of the Mao Center and that, in October 2023, the subcenter was elevated to the category of university center, in line with the construction of the new University City.
In an emotional message, he thanked the support received from President Luis Abinader during his administration, stating that he always found a willingness to support the university's projects and strengthen public higher education.
Beltrán recalled that he recently announced his retirement after 55 years of uninterrupted service in the UASD and expressed that he concludes a term that managed to elevate the pride of belonging to the Primacy of America. Likewise, he urged the new university authorities to continue the process of institutional expansion and strengthening.
The new UASD Santiago Rodríguez Center will have capacity for 1,026 students and was built on a land of 14,552 square meters, with a construction area of 8,543.36 square meters.
The campus has a four-level teaching building with 24 classrooms, four laboratories, a smart classroom, library and computer room. It also has a three-level administrative building, which houses postgraduate classrooms and an auditorium for academic and institutional activities.
The infrastructure incorporates a mixed field with stands, patriotic plaza, treatment plant, cistern, electric generator shed, warehouses, loading and unloading areas, warehouses and spaces for waste management, guaranteeing the necessary conditions for the integral functioning of the university campus.
Likewise, it has 105 parking spaces for light vehicles, motorcycles, buses and spaces reserved for people with disabilities, facilitating access for students, teachers and administrative staff.
The blessing of the work was carried out by the parish priest of the San Ignacio de Loyola parish, Javier Fernández, who prayed that the new university center would be a space for academic training, human growth and service to society, urging the educational community to take care of and take advantage of these facilities for the benefit of present and future generations.

El rector sostuvo que esta expansión responde al compromiso del Gobierno de garantizar quecada 40 kilómetros exista un centro de formación superior o técnica, fortaleciendo el desarrollo de las comunidades y ampliando las oportunidades para la juventud. Al referirse a Santiago Rodríguez, recordó que la presencia de la UASD en la provinciacomenzó el 4 de abril de 1979 como una extensión del Centro Maoy que, en octubre de 2023, el subcentro fue elevado a la categoría de centro universitario, en consonancia con la construcción de la nueva Ciudad Universitaria. En un emotivo mensaje,agradeció el respaldo recibido del presidente Luis Abinaderdurante su gestión, al afirmar que siempre encontró disposición para apoyar los proyectos de la universidad y fortalecer la educación superior pública. Beltrán recordó querecientemente anunció su jubilación tras 55 años de servicio ininterrumpido en la UASDy expresó que concluye una gestión que logró elevar el orgullo de pertenecer a la Primada de América. Asimismo,exhortó a las nuevas autoridades universitarias a dar continuidad al proceso de expansióny fortalecimiento institucional. El nuevo Centro UASD Santiago Rodríguez tendrá capacidad para 1,026 estudiantes y fue construido sobre un terreno de 14,552 metros cuadrados, con un área de construcción de 8,543.36 metros cuadrados. El recinto dispone de un edificio docente de cuatro niveles con 24 aulas, cuatro laboratorios, un aula inteligente, biblioteca y aula de informática. También cuenta con un edificio administrativo de tres niveles, que alberga aulas de postgrado y un auditorio para actividades académicas e institucionales. La infraestructura incorpora una cancha mixta con graderías, plaza patriótica, planta de tratamiento, cisterna, caseta para generador eléctrico, almacenes, áreas de carga y descarga, depósitos y espacios para el manejo de desechos, garantizando las condiciones necesarias para elfuncionamiento integral del campus universitario. Asimismo, dispone de 105 plazas de estacionamiento para vehículos livianos, motocicletas, autobuses y espacios reservados para personas con discapacidad, facilitando el acceso de estudiantes, docentes y personal administrativo.
