Presidente Luis Abinader recibe a ejecutivos de la FIBA en el Palacio Nacional
Santo Domingo.–President Luis Abinader received this Friday at the National Palace executives from the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), who are making an official visit to the country, accompanied by Dominican sports authorities and the Organizing Committee of the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026.
The international delegation was led by Andreas Zagklis, general secretary of FIBA, as well as Carlos Alves, executive director of FIBA Americas.
During the meeting, held in the Private Room of the National Palace, Zagklis presented President Abinader with a basketball as an institutional gift, in a gesture that symbolizes the close relationship between FIBA and the Dominican Republic.
The Dominican Republic in the focus of international basketball
Meanwhile, the president of the Dominican Basketball Federation (Fedombal), Rafael Uribe, highlighted that the visit of the highest authorities of FIBA represents a reason for satisfaction for Dominican basketball and a recognition of the work being done in the country to promote this discipline.
Likewise, he valued President Abinader's willingness to receive the international delegation, considering that this support strengthens efforts to continue promoting sports among Dominican youth.
For his part, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kelvin Cruz, thanked the president for opening a space in his agenda to receive the delegation and explained that the presence of the general secretary of FIBA also responds to the commitments that the national basketball team will play against the United States this Friday, July 3 and, against Nicaragua, next Monday, July 6, matches that focus the attention of international basketball on the Dominican Republic.
Also participating in the meeting were José P. Monegro, president of the Organizing Committee of the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026; Luisín Mejía, president of Centro Caribe Sports and member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and Junior Páez, first vice president of Fedombal.
