AfDB President Commends President Barrow for The Gambia’s Strong Macroeconomic Performance
State House, Banjul, 3rd July 2026:The President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr. Sidi Ould Tah, and his delegation have commended His Excellency President Adama Barrow for The Gambia’s strong macroeconomic performance, particularly the economic growth, domestic resource mobilisation, and ongoing reforms in state-owned enterprises and public procurement.
The commendation was made during a meeting today at State House, where President Barrow received the AfDB delegation for a briefing on the Bank Group’s recent developments. President Barrow described the visit as a vote of confidence in his government and expressed optimism for a strengthened partnership.
During the discussions, President Barrow reaffirmed infrastructure as a key priority for his administration. He outlined how accomplished infrastructures have expanded access to education and increased enrolment at the University of The Gambia, improved access to health services, and extended electricity and road networks to once isolated and remote areas. He further emphasised the importance of infrastructure to expand connectivity and trade within Africa.
Dr. Tah reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to work closely with the Barrow administration to realise these priorities and improve the lives and livelihoods of Gambians. Turning to the upcoming African Caucus meeting in The Gambia, President Barrow said he was proud that the Smiling Coast of Africa would host such an important event. He noted the country’s continued progress through innovative tax expansion and digitalisation programmes, which are supporting the development of national infrastructure.
He stated: “We have to be innovative in raising funds. If it took two previous governments over 30 years to mobilise funds for the Senegambia Bridge and about 100km of road, how long will it take us to fund the 5,000km of road we need?”
The President highlighted the Senegambia Bridge as a success story of the partnership, noting that 75% of the vehicles using the bridge are subregional, connecting people who are trading across borders. He added that its 24-hour service contributes to the country’s economic growth and enhances social service delivery.
President Barrow also took pride in The Gambia’s strong safety record, a conducive business environment, strengthened democracy, and an independent judiciary, which he said create clear advantages for investment opportunities.
He concluded by commending Dr. Tah and the African Development Bank for standing with The Gambia. He concluded by commending Dr. Tah and the African Development Bank for standing with The Gambia.
