Onesvie fortalece cultura de prevención sísmica en Bahoruco con jornada interinstitucional
Bahoruco. – With the aim of reducing vulnerability to seismic events, the National Office of Seismic Evaluation and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings (Onesvie), in coordination with the Provincial Government of Bahoruco and the Mayor's Office of Neiba, developed an inter-institutional coordination day aimed at raising awareness and training on the importance of building a preventive culture in the Dominican Republic.
The initiative was focused on strengthening citizen preparation for the eventual occurrence of seismic events, through the promotion of prevention, education and coordination actions between institutions and communities. As part of this event, the “Voices that Prevent” campaign was presented, an educational and awareness-raising platform designed to promote knowledge and adoption of measures aimed at safeguarding lives, buildings and essential infrastructure against earthquakes.
As part of the development of the day, the central presentation was given by engineer Fausto Estévez, specialist in comprehensive risk management, who addressed issues related to the seismic threat in the region, the reduction of structural vulnerabilities, preventive planning and the strengthening of the response capacities of both institutions and the population in the event of an eventual earthquake.
During her remarks, Governor María Esther Díaz Medina thanked the attendees for their participation and highlighted that these types of initiatives contribute to strengthening collective awareness about the importance of prevention, knowledge and preparation as fundamental tools to reduce risks.
"We all know what has happened in Venezuela after the earthquakes; the information that is handled in the Dominican Republic is that in recent days several earthquakes have been registered, which are worrying, which is why it is important to give the Voices that Prevent conference to the residents of the Bahoruco province in order to be prepared for the possibility of a similar event."
For his part, Mayor Yadiel Subervíreaffirmed the commitment of the Neiba City Council to promoting actions aimed at risk management and prevention, highlighting the importance of coordination between authorities, relief agencies and citizens to build safer and more resilient communities.
The person in charge of the South Delegation, Miguel López, thanked the provincial governor, María Esther Díaz Medina, and all the participants for showing so much interest in holding the meeting, and said that Onesvie has been working permanently on the evaluation of the main buildings in the South region. He also highlighted that in this process they have collected information on more than 300 buildings, which include bridges, schools, hospitals, among others.
“In addition to all these evaluations, we have held preventive awareness meetings through the conference “Voices that Prevent”, in Barahona, Azua, San Juan, Pedernales and now in Bahoruco, and we intend to take them to the remaining provinces in the area.”
The activity took place in the conference room of the Municipal Mayor's Office of Neiba and included the participation of the provincial governor of Bahoruco, María Esther Díaz Medina; the municipal mayor, Yadiel Suberví, and the person in charge of the South Delegation of Onesvie, Miguel López, as well as representatives of government institutions, response organizations, professionals from different areas and members of the community.
With the holding of this discussion, the Provincial Government of Bahoruco, the Municipal Mayor's Office of Neiba and Onesvie reaffirmed their commitment to continue promoting awareness-raising, training and inter-institutional coordination actions that strengthen the resilience of Dominican communities against seismic risks.
In this sense, the institution reports that it will continue to develop the “Voices that Prevent” initiative throughout the country, with the purpose of consolidating a culture of prevention at the national level, promoting education and citizen preparation as fundamental pillars for the protection of lives and essential infrastructure in the Dominican Republic.

Como parte de esta jornada, fue presentada la campaña“Voces que Previenen”, una plataforma educativa y de sensibilización diseñada para fomentar el conocimiento y la adopción demedidas orientadas a salvaguardar vidas, edificaciones e infraestructuras esenciales frente a terremotos. Como parte del desarrollo de la jornada, la ponencia central estuvo a cargo del ingenieroFausto Estévez, especialista en gestión integral del riesgo, quien abordó temas relacionados con laamenaza sísmica en la región, la reducción de vulnerabilidades estructurales, la planificación preventiva y el fortalecimiento de lascapacidades de respuestatanto de las instituciones como de la población ante un eventual terremoto. Durante sus palabras, la gobernadoraMaría Esther Díaz Medinaagradeció la participación de los asistentes y destacó que este tipo de iniciativas contribuyen a fortalecer laconciencia colectiva sobre la importancia de la prevención,el conocimiento y la preparación como herramientas fundamentales para reducir riesgos. “Sabemos todos lo que ha pasado en Venezuela tras los terremotos; la información que se maneja en República Dominicana es que en los últimos días se han registrado varios sismos, que preocupan, por eso la importancia de impartir entre los ciudadanos residentes de la provincia Bahoruco, la conferencia Voces que Previenen para de esta manera estar preparados ante la posibilidad de un evento similar”. De su lado, el alcaldeYadiel Subervíreafirmó el compromiso del Ayuntamiento de Neiba con el impulso de acciones orientadas a lagestión del riesgo y la prevención,resaltando la importancia de la coordinación entre autoridades, organismos de socorro y ciudadanía para construircomunidades más seguras y resilientes. El encargado de la Delegación Sur,Miguel López, agradeció a la gobernadora provincial, María Esther Díaz Medina, y a todos los participantes por mostrar tanto interés en la realización del encuentro, y refirió que Onesvie ha venido trabajando de manera permanente en laevaluación de las principales edificaciones de la región Sur.Igualmente destacó que en ese proceso han levantado información demás de 300 edificaciones,que incluyen, puentes, escuelas, hospitales, entre otras. “Además de todas estas evaluaciones, hemos realizado encuentros de sensibilización preventiva a través de la conferencia “Voces que Previenen”, en Barahona, Azua, San Juan, Pedernales y ahora en Bahoruco, y pretendemos llevarlas a las restantes provincias de la zona”. La actividad se llevó a cabo en el salón de conferencias de la Alcaldía Municipal de Neiba y contó con la participación de la gobernadora provincial de Bahoruco, María Esther Díaz Medina; el alcalde municipal, Yadiel Suberví, y el encargado de la Delegación Sur de Onesvie, Miguel López, así como representantes de instituciones gubernamentales, organismos de respuesta, profesionales de distintas áreas y miembros de la comunidad. Con la realización de este conversatorio, la Gobernación Provincial de Bahoruco, la Alcaldía Municipal de Neiba y Onesvie reafirmaron sucompromisode continuar impulsandoacciones de sensibilización, capacitación y articulación interinstitucionalque fortalezcan la resiliencia de las comunidades dominicanas frente a losriesgos sísmicos. En ese sentido, la institución informa que continuará desarrollando la iniciativa “Voces que Previenen”en todo el país,con el propósito de consolidar unacultura de prevención a nivel nacional, promoviendo la educación y la preparación ciudadana como pilares fundamentales para la protección de vidas e infraestructuras esenciales en la República Dominicana.
