Le Président Ndayishimiye prend part à la veillée patriotique « Umutwenzi Festival » à la veille du 64ème anniversaire de l’Indépendance du Burundi
The President of the Republic of Burundi, His Excellency Évariste Ndayishimiye, accompanied by His Wife, Her Excellency Angeline Ndayishimiye, as well as the country's high authorities, took part, on July 1, in the ceremonies marking the 64th anniversary of the independence of Burundi organized at the Intwari stadium in Bujumbura.
The ceremonies began with the review of the troops by the Supreme Commander of the Defense and Security Forces, His Excellency Évariste Ndayishimiye, followed by the traditional military parade and paramilitary exercises, illustrating the professionalism of the defense and security forces, as well as the attachment of the Burundian people to national unity, sovereignty and peace.
In his speech, the Head of State returned to the after-effects of the colonial period, believing that certain behaviors inherited from that era, notably disobedience, lack of cohesion and the tendency to favor external interests to the detriment of those of the Nation, weakened Burundian society and slowed down national construction efforts. According to him, this legacy also favored lies, manipulation, divisions and dislocation of the Burundian community.
President Ndayishimiye also recognized the historical responsibility of former leaders in the dislocation of the Burundian community and the emergence of ethnic divisions. He pleaded for all light to be shed on the tragedies of the past in order to recognize the suffering of the victims, to promote national reconciliation and to reassure the victims of no return to disaster.
Taking advantage of this celebration of independence, the Head of State appealed to all Burundians to definitively break with these practices in order to build a united, sovereign country resolutely committed to the path of development. He further recommended loving one's homeland and being ready to sacrifice oneself for it, taking as a model the Burundian Bihome sacrificed in place of King Mwezi Gisabo, rather than the former historical figures who rebelled against the latter Kirima and Maconco.
While urging leaders to set an example by fully committing to the country's development, he stressed that the country belongs to the Burundians, who must fully benefit from the country's wealth, including the minerals, land and climatic conditions it has.
The President of the Republic finally paid a vibrant tribute to the defenders of the Nation who contributed to the consolidation of the gains of independence. On this occasion, he decorated six soldiers with the Order of Patriotic Merit, including the late Captain Ndayishemeze Eraste posthumously, in recognition of their bravery, their exemplary commitment and their sacrifice in the service of the homeland.

Les cérémonies ont débuté par le passage en revue des troupes par le Commandant suprême des Forces de Défense et de Sécurité, Son Excellence Évariste Ndayishimiye, suivi par le traditionnel défilé militaire et d’exercices paramilitaires, illustrant le professionnalisme des forces de défense et de sécurité, ainsi que l’attachement du peuple burundais à l’unité nationale, à la souveraineté et à la paix. Dans son allocution, le Chef de l’État est revenu sur les séquelles de la période coloniale, estimant que certains comportements hérités de cette époque, notamment la désobéissance, le manque de cohésion et la tendance à privilégier des intérêts extérieurs au détriment de ceux de la Nation, ont affaibli la société burundaise et ralenti les efforts de construction nationale.Selon lui, cet héritage a également favorisé le mensonge, la manipulation, les divisions et la dislocation de la communauté burundaise. Le Président Ndayishimiye a, par ailleurs, reconnu la responsabilité historique des anciens dirigeants dans la dislocation de la communauté burundaise et l’émergence des divisions ethniques. Il a plaidé pour que toute la lumière soit faite sur les tragédies du passé afin de reconnaître les souffrances des victimes, de favoriser la réconciliation nationale et de rassurer les victimes du non retour au désastre. Profitant de cette célébration de l’indépendance, le Chef de l’État a lancé un appel à tous les Burundais de rompre définitivement avec ces pratiques afin de bâtir un pays uni, souverain et résolument engagé sur la voie du développement. Il a en outre recommandé d’aimer sa patrie et d’être prête à se sacrifier pour elle, en prenant pour modèle le Burundais Bihome sacrifié à la place du Roi Mwezi Gisabo, plutôt que les anciennes figures historiques rebelles à ce dernier Kirima et Maconco. Tout en exhortant les leaders à montrer l’exemple en s’engageant pleinement dans le développement du pays, il a souligné que le pays appartient aux Burundais, qui doivent bénéficier pleinement des richesses du pays, notamment les minerais, les terres et les conditions climatiques dont il dispose. Le Président de la République a finalement rendu un vibrant hommage aux défenseurs de la Nation ayant contribué à la consolidation des acquis de l’indépendance. À cette occasion, il a décoré de l’Ordre de Mérite Patriotique six militaires, dont feu Capitaine Ndayishemeze Eraste à titre posthume, en reconnaissance de leur bravoure, de leur engagement exemplaire et de leur sacrifice au service de la patrie.
