Nabil Fahmy assumes office as Arab League Secretary-General

Cairo, July 1 (SANA)Nabil Fahmy officially assumed office as Secretary-General ofthe League of Arab Stateson Wednesday, succeeding Ahmed Aboul Gheit in a formal handover marking the transition of the organization’s leadership.

The Arab League announced in a post on X that former Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy had taken up his duties as Secretary-General.

Following the handover ceremony, Fahmy received briefings from General Secretariat officials on the latest political developments as he began overseeing the League’s agenda and key Arab issues.

The new secretary-general signed his first official correspondence addressed to Arab leaders, expressing his appreciation for the confidence placed in him. He also signed letters to Arab foreign ministers outlining an assessment of current regional developments and proposals aimed at strengthening the Arab world’s capacity, and that of the League of Arab States, to address ongoing challenges.

His correspondence stressed the importance of reforming and modernizing the Arab League to enhance its ability to respond to regional and international developments.

Fahmy is the ninth Secretary-General in the Arab League’s history since its establishment in 1945.

Over more than eight decades, the League of Arab States has maintained its role as the principal institutional framework for Arab countries and the leading forum for consultation, coordination and advancing Arab causes despite successive regional crises and transformations.
