Damascus, July 1 (SANA)Canadian Ambassador to Syria GregoryGalligansaid Wednesday that President Ahmad al-Sharaa’s appointment of 70 members to the People’s Assembly marks an important step in Syria’s transitional phase, highlighting the role the legislature can play in advancing reforms and building a better future for Syrians.

In a post on X, Galligan said: “The President’s appointment of 70 members to the Syrian People’s Assembly marks an important step in Syria’s transition. As the Assembly prepares to hold its first session, attention now turns to the role it can play in advancing reform, expanding political participation, and building a better future for all Syrians.”

Earlier Wednesday, Mohammad Taha al-Ahmad, Chairman of the Higher Committee for People’s Assembly Elections, announced the names of the Assembly members, including the one-third appointed by President Ahmad al-Sharaa in accordance with constitutional powers.

Al-Ahmad said the appointed members include national figures, academics and professionals with diverse expertise, a move aimed at strengthening the role of the People’s Assembly during the next phase.
