Damascus, July 1 (SANA)Canadian Ambassador to Syria GregoryGalligansaid Wednesday that President Ahmad al-Sharaa’s appointment of 70 members to the People’s Assembly marks an important step in Syria’s transitional phase, highlighting the role the legislature can play in advancing reforms and building a better future for Syrians.

In a post on X, Galligan said: “The President’s appointment of 70 members to the Syrian People’s Assembly marks an important step in Syria’s transition. Earlier Wednesday, Mohammad Taha al-Ahmad, Chairman of the Higher Committee for People’s Assembly Elections, announced the names of the Assembly members, including the one-third appointed by President Ahmad al-Sharaa in accordance with constitutional powers.

Al-Ahmad said the appointed members include national figures, academics and professionals with diverse expertise, a move aimed at strengthening the role of the People’s Assembly during the next phase.
