Paraguay stun Germany on penalties to reach World Cup last 16
Foxborough, Massachusetts, June 30 (SANA)Paraguayadvanced to the last 16 of the2026 FIFA World Cupafter defeatingGermany4-3 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time in their round-of-32 match at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Paraguay took the lead in the 42nd minute through Julio Enciso after dominating much of the first half and creating the better scoring opportunities.
Germany responded shortly after the break, with Kai Havertz heading in an equalizer in the 54th minute to bring the four-time world champions back into the contest.
Neither side was able to break the deadlock during the remainder of regulation or in the extra 30 minutes despite several chances at both ends, sending the match to a penalty shootout.
Paraguay held their nerve from the spot, converting four penalties to Germany’s three to secure their place in the last 16. Germany, one of the tournament favorites, were eliminated from the competition.
