Celebrating and empowering fishers: De motor achter onze voedselveiligheid en -zekerheid!
June 29 is “International Fisherman's Day”. On this day we reflect on an essential theme: “Celebrating and empowering fishers' contribution to food safety and security.”
For Suriname this is more than a slogan; it is the daily reality of our fishing sector. Our fishermen, from the small vessels on the rivers to the larger ships on the ocean, are the silent force that ensures that every household in our country has access to high-quality, protein-rich food.
Food safety as a priority.
Food safety starts at the source. At the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (LVV), we are well aware that the quality of our fish is crucial for public health. Through the strict implementation of quality controls and the further rollout of systems such as the CATCH system, we ensure that our fish meets the highest standards—both for local consumers and for the international export market. This not only protects the consumer, but also strengthens the reputation of our Surinamese fish products worldwide.
Empowerment: Investing in our people
When it comes to empowering our fishermen, we look beyond just the catch. It means that we provide them with the necessary tools to practice their profession more professionally and safely. This includes:
The fishing sector is a dynamic part of our economy and culture. However, we must also take care of our natural resources. By focusing on sustainable fisheries management, we ensure that our fishing grounds remain rich and that fishing remains a source of prosperity and nutrition for future generations.
Today we honor the tireless efforts of our fishermen. The fisherman who leaves before dawn, who braves wind and weather and who contributes to the health of our nation with his craftsmanship.

Op deze dag staan we stil bij een essentieel thema:“Celebrating and empowering fishers’ contribution to food safety and security.” Voor Suriname is dit meer dan een slogan; het is de dagelijkse realiteit van onze visserijsector. Onze vissers, van de kleine vaartuigen op de rivieren tot de grotere schepen op de oceaan, zijn de stille kracht die ervoor zorgt dat elk huishouden in ons land toegang heeft tot hoogwaardige, eiwitrijke voeding. Voedselveiligheid als prioriteit. Voedselveiligheid begint bij de bron. Wij zijn ons er bij het Ministerie van Landbouw, Veeteelt en Visserij (LVV) terdege van bewust dat de kwaliteit van onze vis cruciaal is voor de volksgezondheid. Door de strikte implementatie van kwaliteitscontroles en de verdere uitrol van systemen zoals de CATCH-systematiek, waarborgen we dat onze vis voldoet aan de hoogste standaarden—zowel voor de lokale consument als voor de internationale exportmarkt. Dit beschermt niet alleen de consument, maar versterkt ook de reputatie van onze Surinaamse visproducten wereldwijd. Empowerment: Investeren in onze mensen Bij “empowerment” van onze vissers kijken we verder dan alleen de vangst. Het betekent dat we hen voorzien van de nodige instrumenten om hun vak professioneler en veiliger uit te oefenen. Dit omvat: De visserijsector is een dynamisch onderdeel van onze economie en cultuur. Echter, we moeten ook waken over onze natuurlijke hulpbronnen. Door in te zetten op duurzaam visserijbeheer, zorgen we ervoor dat onze visgronden rijk blijven en dat de visserij ook voor de volgende generaties een bron van welvaart en voeding blijft. Vandaag eren we de onvermoeibare inzet van onze vissers. De visser die voor dag en dauw vertrekt, die weer en wind trotseert en die met zijn vakmanschap bijdraagt aan de gezondheid van onze natie. Bedankt aan alle Surinaamse vissers voor jullie toewijding. Jullie zijn het kloppend hart van deze sector!
