Medio Ambiente y Minerd fortalecen la educación ambiental en las escuelas con Campamento Ecohéroes 2026 en Santo Domingo y Santiago
Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and the Ministry of Education (Minerd), through Regional 15, began this Monday the Ecohéroes 2026 Camp, an inter-institutional coordination initiative that will impact more than 4,000 students from Santo Domingo, Pedro Brand and Santiago, with the purpose of strengthening environmental education in the country's educational centers.
The Ecohéroes 2026 Camp was inaugurated this Monday at the República de Costa Rica Primary School, in an event led by the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Paíno Henríquez, who highlighted the importance of incorporating environmental education in the training of children and adolescents as part of a vision of sustainability and citizen responsibility.
"Environmental education begins in the classrooms, but it takes on true meaning when it becomes a way of living and relating to our environment. With this initiative we are instilling in thousands of boys, girls and adolescents the awareness and commitment that the country needs to protect its natural heritage," said Minister Paíno Henríquez.
The official highlighted that these actions are part of the Dominican Government's commitment to protecting natural resources and strengthening a culture of conservation throughout the national territory. He also pointed out that to achieve this, a joint effort is required between State institutions, communities and citizens.
From June 29 to July 3, about 10 educational centers in Santo Domingo and Pedro Brand, corresponding to Regional 15 of Minerd, will simultaneously develop the second edition of the environmental camp, which this year expands for the first time to Regional 08 of Santiago, in the Prof. Eugenio De Jesús Marcano Botanical Garden of that city.
In its first edition, which was in 2025, the initiative promoted by the Ministry of the Environment benefited some 1,600 students from six educational centers in Regional 15. This year, the participation of 3,500 students from Santo Domingo and Pedro Brand, and another 600 from Regional 08 in Santiago, is expected.
The director of Minerd Regional 15, Eddy Chávez Placencio, said that "The opening of the Ecohéroes Camp marks the beginning of a transformative experience that inspires our children and young people to become agents of change. With enthusiasm, creativity and commitment, participants will learn that each action in favor of the environment contributes to building more conscious, supportive and sustainable communities. This space represents an opportunity to sow values, strengthen the love for nature and cultivate hope for a better future for everyone.”
The director of Environmental Education of the Environment, Daryelin Torres, explained that the experience includes both training workshops for teachers and technicians of the educational system and the delivery of kits of teaching materials and resources to participating schools to support the continuity of these actions during the school year, in compliance with Law 94-20.
The Vice Ministry of Technical and Pedagogical Services of Minerd, through its different entities, supports the initiative within the framework of the National Strategy for Environmental Education and School Sustainability, which articulates with the Ministry of the Environment the transversality of comprehensive environmental education and coordinates joint actions in coherence with the Presidential Goal 2024-2028 and the government policy “school as the center of development.”
The opening ceremony was also attended by representatives of Cementos Progreso, a company that donated 1,500 eco-friendly notebooks made from the reuse of used pets, an initiative promoted by CuadernosxUnMañana and the company together with the Ministry of the Environment to promote the circular economy and responsible consumption in schools.
In Santo Domingo and Pedro Brand, 10 educational centers belonging to districts 01, 02, 03, 04, 05 and 06 of Regional 15 of Minerd will participate. Among them are the Salomé Ureña Primary School, in Capotillo; the San José Obrero Primary School and the Fermina Peguero Payano School, in La Guáyiga; the Republic of Costa Rica School, in Los Ríos; the Santa Fe y Esperanza Secondary School, in Pantoja; the María Teresa Quidiello High School and the Juana Saltitopa Primary School, in Los Alcarrizos; the Las Malvinas School, in Herrera; the República de Chile School, in San Carlos, and the Santo Domingo Primary School, in Las Cañitas.
Themes and dynamics of camp 2026
During the five days of activities, students will address topics related to water, solid waste, school gardens, climate change, biodiversity, protected areas, coastal and marine resources, and environmental citizenship.
As part of the experience, they will participate in recreational and educational activities, including traditional games linked to plants, exchanges with park rangers from protected areas and forest fire brigades, as well as educational outings to institutions attached to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. Among the spaces to visit are the National Zoological Park Arq. Manuel Valverde Podesta, the Dr. Rafael María Moscoso National Botanical Garden, the National Aquarium and the National Museum of Natural History, institutions dedicated to research, conservation and environmental education.
Delivery of educational resources to strengthen learning during the camp
As part of the program, the Ministry of the Environment will provide teachers and students with guides, pedagogical sheets and activity booklets on water, solid waste, biodiversity, climate change and environmental citizenship, resources designed to strengthen learning and provide continuity to environmental education throughout the school year.
