Presidente Abinader inaugura por segundo año consecutivo los Juegos Deportivos Fronterizos 2026
Jimaní, Independencia.–President Luis Abinader, together with the Minister of Sports, Kelvin Cruz, inaugurated this Friday for the second consecutive year the 2026 Border Sports Games, with the participation of more than 2,200 athletes from the provinces of Montecristi, Dajabón, Santiago Rodríguez, Elías Piña, Independencia, Bahoruco and Pedernales.
The competition brings together athletes in 14 disciplines: chess, athletics, basketball, handball, baseball, boxing, dominoes, soccer, judo, karate, wrestling, softball, table tennis and volleyball, promoting talent, regional integration and fair play among young people in the border area.
During the opening ceremony, held at the Professor Héctor Marino Pérez Novas Sports Center in Jimaní, the president, accompanied by the Minister of Education, Luis Miguel De Camps, highlighted that this initiative, resumed in 2025 after a decade without taking place, will continue to be held permanently as part of the Government's policy to strengthen sports and generate greater opportunities for border youth.
The governor assured that the Border Games are here to stay and will be held every year with an increasingly strengthened organization. "These Games are to stay. Every year we are going to hold them and each year we will do them better. That is the commitment we have with the border provinces and with our young people."
Likewise, he recalled that the venue of the Games will alternate between the provinces of the northern and southern border. He explained that the 2025 edition was held in Montecristi, this year's is based in Independencia and announced that the next edition will be organized by the province of Dajabón. He also indicated that later the event will return to a province in the Southern region, following planning that allows all border provinces to benefit equitably.
The head of state affirmed that the true success of the Games is not only measured by sports results, but by the opportunity they provide to thousands of young people to develop themselves through sports, strengthen coexistence and build a culture of peace on the border.
Likewise, he urged athletes to compete with enthusiasm, discipline and respect for the rules, allowing performance on the field to determine the champions. "I am very proud of each province and each team. Count on us to continue holding better Border Games every year," he said.
President Abinader congratulated the Ministry of Sports and Recreation (Miderec), the organizing committee and all the institutions that made the event possible, highlighting the joint effort to consolidate the Border Games as a scenario for integration, development and training in values.
Commitment to border sports
The Minister of Sports, Kelvin Cruz, also spoke at the event, who reported that more than 2,200 athletes from the seven border provinces participate in the 2026 Border Sports Games and highlighted that the event represents the fulfillment of the commitment assumed by President Luis Abinader to strengthen sports in this important region of the country.
He explained that one of the first instructions received upon assuming the Ministry was to make the border a priority for the Government's sports policies, expanding opportunities for children, young people and high-performance athletes.
Cruz recalled that, after ten years without being held, the Border Games were rescued in 2025 and today they are consolidated as a platform to discover talents, promote regional integration and promote values such as discipline, respect and healthy competition.
The official highlighted the investments made by the Government in sports infrastructure, among them the installation of a state-of-the-art synthetic floor and new lighting in the Jimaní sports center; a FIBA-certified wooden floor in the Duvergé multipurpose facility, as well as the lighting of the Jimaní baseball stadium, a work awaited for more than 24 years.
In addition, he announced that President Abinader authorized the construction of a sports field in the La Mercedes sector of Duvergé, and ordered the holding of an artistic concert as part of the activities of the 2026 Border Games.
Representing all the participants, the athlete Yadriela Alexandra Medrano Trinidad, member of the National Handball Team and the Bahoruco delegation, took the sports oath, committing, along with the other competitors, to respect the rules, compete with a spirit of fraternity and represent their provinces and the Dominican Republic with dignity.
Authorities highlight impact of the Games
The governor of Independencia, Mercedes Nova, stated that the celebration of the Border Games turns the border into a space for meeting, integration and opportunities for youth, while thanking President Luis Abinader and Minister Kelvin Cruz for promoting an initiative that strengthens national unity through sport.
The mayor of Jimaní, Laureano Santana, welcomed the participating delegations and appreciated the choice of the province as the venue for the grand final, highlighting that the event boosts the local economy, strengthens community pride and opens new opportunities for young athletes.
For his part, the senator for Independence, Dagoberto Rodríguez, thanked President Abinader for fulfilling the commitment to bring the Border Games to the province and highlighted the work of the Ministry of Sports to return this competition to the national sports calendar after ten years of absence.
Wide institutional representation
The ceremony was attended by national, provincial and municipal authorities, sports leaders, coaches, athletes and representatives of the different sports federations, who supported the celebration of Games that strengthen the integration of the border and reaffirm the Government's commitment to the sports, social and human development of that region of the country.
Pastor Fidian Orlando Martínez blessed the ceremony with a prayer for unity, health and healthy competition among athletes, as well as for the success of the 2026 Border Sports Games.

El gobernante aseguró que los Juegos Fronterizos llegaron para quedarse y se realizarán cada año con una organización cada vez más fortalecida.“Estos Juegos son para quedarse. Todos los años los vamos a realizar y cada año los haremos mejor. Ese es el compromiso que tenemos con las provincias fronterizas y con nuestros jóvenes”. Asimismo, recordó que la sede de los Juegos se alternará entre lasprovincias de la frontera norte y sur. Explicó que la edición de 2025 se celebró en Montecristi, la de este año tiene como sede a Independencia y anunció que lapróxima edición será organizada por la provincia de Dajabón. También indicó que posteriormente el evento regresará a una provincia de la región Sur, siguiendo una planificación que permita beneficiar de manera equitativa atodas las provincias fronterizas. El jefe de Estado afirmó que el verdadero éxito de los Juegos no solo se mide por los resultados deportivos, sino por la oportunidad que brindan amiles de jóvenespara desarrollarse a través del deporte, fortalecer la convivencia y construir unacultura de paz en la frontera. Asimismo, exhortó a los atletas a competir conentusiasmo, disciplina y respetopor las reglas, permitiendo que sea el desempeño en el terreno de juego el que determine a los campeones. “Estoy muy orgulloso de cada provincia y de cada equipo. Explicó que una de las primeras instrucciones recibidas al asumir el Ministerio fue convertir la frontera en unaprioridad para las políticas deportivasdel Gobierno, ampliando las oportunidades paraniños, jóvenes y atletasde alto rendimiento. Cruz recordó que, tras diez años sin celebrarse, los Juegos Fronterizos fueron rescatados en 2025 y hoy se consolidan como una plataforma para descubrir talentos, promover la integración regional y fomentar valores como ladisciplina, el respeto y la sana competencia. El funcionario resaltó las inversiones ejecutadas por el Gobierno en infraestructura deportiva, entre ellas la instalación de un piso sintético de última generación y nuevailuminación en el polideportivo de Jimaní; un piso de maderacertificado por la FIBAen el multiuso de Duvergé, así como lailuminación del estadio de béisbol de Jimaní, una obra esperada durantemás de 24 años. Además, anunció que el presidente Abinader autorizó la construcción de unacancha deportiva en el sector La Mercedes, de Duvergé,y dispuso la realización de un concierto artístico como parte de las actividades de los Juegos Fronterizos 2026.
