UK reaffirms support for Syria’s transitional justice process

London, June 26 (SANA)The United Kingdom on Friday reaffirmed its support for Syria’s transitional justice process, saying efforts to deliver justice for victims and clarify the fate of the missing remain essential to the country’s long-term stability.

In a statement posted on Facebook to mark the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, theBritish Mission to Syriaexpressed solidarity with survivors of torture and stressed the importance of accountability for violations committed against the Syrian people.

The mission said Syria’s national bodies responsible for transitional justice and missing persons, working in cooperation withUnited Nationsagencies, play a key role in securing justice for victims and their families.

It added that British support for the Commission forInternational Justice and Accountability (CIJA)helps collect and preserve evidence and prepare case files related to crimes committed in Syria, supporting ongoing investigations and prosecutions.

The statement comes as Syrian courts continue legal proceedings against individuals accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the rule of the deposed regime.

The first trial involving Atef Najib began on April 26 as part of broader efforts to establish the truth, deliver justice for victims and hold those responsible accountable through judicial proceedings.F.J./ABD
