This year, Nigeria could have faced a fertiliser crisis.
Global supply chains were under pressure and input costs were rising. Conflict in the Middle East made the risk worse.
For farmers, that could have meant higher fertiliser prices, lower yields, and more pressure on food prices.
But our administration moved early.
Through the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative (PFI), now restructured under MOFI:
✅ 449,000+ metric tonnes (about 9 million bags) of fertiliser inputs for our blending plants were secured ✅ 10 vessels discharged or in transit ✅ 1.1 million metric tonnes production targeted in 2026 ✅ About 22 million bags expected this year ✅ ₦61.58 billion saved through strategic contracting by PFI ✅ 90+ blending plants protected nationwide. Nigeria has sub-Saharan Africa’s Largest fertiliser blending capacity.
And through the Renewed Hope Farm Input Support Programme, NADF is taking locally produced fertiliser to farmers:
✅ 515,720 bags currently being distributed ✅ 128,930 smallholder farmers targeted ✅ 25 states + FCT covered ✅ 5,040 farmers per participating state ✅ 20,160 bags per participating state ✅ Priority crops: rice, maize, cassava and soybean
This is what food security looks like in practice. We secure the inputs, keep local plants producing, get fertiliser to farmers, raise productivity, and ease pressure on food prices over time.
A promise made. A promise being kept. We will keep working to ensure food security across the value chain for Nigeria.
