Guterres calls for greater solidarity with refugees and their rights
New York, June 20 (SANA)- United Nations Secretary-General AntónioGuterrescalled for greater solidarity and stronger action to protect people who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict or persecution.In a message markingWorld Refugee Day, observed on Saturday, June 20, Guterres stated that millions of women, children, and men are forced to seek safety far from their homes as a result of both newly emerging conflicts and long-running crises.Guterres stressed the importance of upholding international refugee law, protecting the right to seek asylum, and finding solutions that enable refugees to live in safety and dignity.
He also called for providing genuine opportunities for self-reliance, intensifying efforts to achieve peace, and adhering to the provisions of theRefugee Convention, which has saved millions of lives since its adoption 75 years ago following the end of World War II.
In his message, Guterres also called for stronger support for refugees and for the countries and communities that host them, emphasizing that collective action is essential to protecting the rights of all those who are forced to flee their homes.World Refugee Day is observed on June 20 each year. It is dedicated to highlighting the concerns, issues, and challenges faced by refugees and people whose lives are threatened in their home countries, as well as shedding light on their suffering and exploring ways to provide them with greater assistance.The day is held under the auspices of theUnited Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
