SNS inaugura primera unidad de cirugía intrauterina del país; bebés podrán ser operados antes de nacer de forma gratuita
Santo Domingo.- The National Health Service (SNS) inaugurated the Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Fetal Therapy Unit in the Doctor Luis Eduardo Aybar Health City, a pioneering center that will allow surgeries to be performed on babies inside the womb to correct conditions that could compromise their life before birth.
The new unit, located at the Doctor Julio Manuel Rodríguez Grullón Maternal and Child Hospital, marks a before and after in the care of high-risk pregnancies in the Dominican Republic, by incorporating advanced prenatal diagnosis services, multidisciplinary monitoring and specialized fetal therapies that until now were only available in highly specialized private centers in the country, as well as abroad.
During the ribbon cutting ceremony, the executive director of the SNS, Dr. Julio Landrón, highlighted that it is a unique unit in the Public Health Network of the country and in much of the region, equipped to perform fetal therapy procedures and intrauterine surgeries that offer new opportunities for life to hundreds of babies.
"This unit will allow intrauterine surgeries to be performed, an innovation that represents a transcendental step for our country. It offers an opportunity to families and mothers whose babies present some type of malformation or injury during pregnancy, allowing surgical intervention without the need to interrupt the pregnancy," he stated.
Landrón explained that these interventions significantly increase the chances of survival of fetuses and allow various medical conditions to be corrected early, improving their prognosis and quality of life before birth.
Likewise, it guaranteed institutional support to ensure the sustainability and strengthening of the services that the unit will offer.
"No family or pregnancy is exempt from facing situations of this nature. Therefore, we are committed to providing all the necessary support so that this unit benefits those who require these services," he expressed.
Likewise, the specialist in Maternal Fetal Medicine and Fetal Surgery, Dr. Ramiro Jesús Díaz, who will direct the new area, described the opening of the unit as one of the most important advances in Dominican medicine in recent years, by making procedures available to the population that previously forced families to seek care outside the country.
The specialist recalled that many patients had to travel abroad to access these treatments, facing costs that ranged between $50,000 and $80,000, and now these procedures can be performed free of charge within the Public Health Network.
Likewise, the authorities highlighted that the unit will offer comprehensive care from diagnosis to post-birth follow-up, through a highly specialized multidisciplinary team and the support of the Luis Eduardo Aybar Health City along with other national reference centers.
The new area is prepared to treat cases of fetal anatomical alterations, complicated multiple pregnancies, fetal anemia, congenital infections and other highly complex pathologies. Patients will be referred from the first weeks of pregnancy to receive specialized evaluation and timely treatment according to each condition.
The unit begins its operations with state-of-the-art technology in specialized ultrasonography, minimally invasive procedures and access to advanced studies such as fetal magnetic resonance, tools that will allow more precise diagnoses and better clinical results.
The team is made up of specialists in maternal fetal medicine, fetal surgery, high-risk obstetrics, neonatology, pediatric surgery, pediatric cardiology, medical genetics, pediatric radiology, obstetric anesthesiology and perinatal psychology, as well as specialized nursing staff.

Durante el acto de corte de cinta, el director ejecutivo del SNS, doctorJulio Landrón,destacó que se trata de unaunidad única en la Red Pública de Salud del país y en gran parte de la región, equipada para realizar procedimientos de terapia fetal y cirugías intrauterinas que ofrecennuevas oportunidades de vida a cientos de bebés. “Esta unidad permitirá realizar cirugías intrauterinas, una innovación que representa un paso trascendental para nuestro país. Ofrece una oportunidad a las familias y a las madres cuyos bebés presentan algún tipo de malformación o lesión durante el embarazo, permitiendo intervenir quirúrgicamente sin necesidad de interrumpir la gestación”,afirmó. Landrón explicó que estas intervencionesaumentan significativamente las probabilidades de supervivencia de los fetos ypermiten corregir de manera temprana diversas condiciones médicas, mejorando su pronóstico y calidad de vida desde antes del nacimiento. Asimismo, garantizó elrespaldo institucionalpara asegurar la sostenibilidad y el fortalecimiento de los servicios que ofrecerá la unidad. “Ninguna familia ni ningún embarazo está exento de enfrentar situaciones de esta naturaleza. Por eso, nos comprometemos a brindar todo el apoyo necesario para que esta unidad beneficie a quienes requieran estos servicios”,expresó. De igual manera, el especialista en Medicina Materno Fetal y Cirugía Fetal, doctorRamiro Jesús Díaz, quien dirigirá la nueva área, calificó la apertura de la unidad comouno de los avances más importantes de la medicina dominicana en los últimos años,al poner al alcance de la población procedimientos que anteriormente obligaban a las familias a buscar atención fuera del país. El especialista recordó que muchos pacientes debían trasladarse al extranjero para acceder a estos tratamientos, enfrentandocostos que oscilaban entre los 50,000 y 80,000 dólares, y ahora esos procedimientos podrán realizarsede manera gratuitadentro de la Red Pública de Salud. De igual forma, las autoridades destacaron que la unidad ofreceráatención integral desde el diagnóstico hasta el seguimiento posterior al nacimiento, mediante un equipo multidisciplinario altamente especializado y el apoyo de la Ciudad Sanitaria Luis Eduardo Aybar junto con otros centros de referencia nacional. La nueva área está preparada para atender casos dealteraciones anatómicas fetales, embarazos múltiples complicados, anemia fetal, infecciones congénitas y otras patologías de alta complejidad. Los pacientes serán referidos desde las primeras semanas de gestación para recibir evaluación especializada y tratamiento oportuno según cada condición. La unidad inicia sus operaciones contecnología de última generación en ultrasonografía especializada, procedimientos mínimamente invasivos y acceso a estudios avanzados comoresonancia magnética fetal, herramientas que permitirán diagnósticos más precisos y mejores resultados clínicos. El equipo está integrado por especialistas en medicina materno fetal, cirugía fetal, obstetricia de alto riesgo, neonatología, cirugía pediátrica, cardiología pediátrica, genética médica, radiología pediátrica, anestesiología obstétrica y psicología perinatal, al igual que personal de enfermería especializado.
