France urges halt to Israeli military escalation in Lebanon

Paris, June 19 (SANA)French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot on Friday called for an immediate halt to Israel’s military escalation in Lebanon and urged the United States to apply pressure to ease rising tensions.

According to Reuters, Barrot said France was continuing efforts to organize an international conference aimed at mobilizing support for the Lebanese army.

His remarks came after Israeli statements suggesting it had not ruled out strikes beyond its designated operational zone in southernLebanon.

OnIran, he said France would not agree to lifting United Nations Security Council sanctions on Tehran unless it is satisfied with the outcome of upcoming negotiations on its nuclear program.

He added that regional stability would not be achieved without addressing concerns over Iran’s ballistic missile program, stressing the need for what he described as a fundamental shift in Iran’s position.

U.S. President Donald Trumpsaid on Thursday that Washington is seeking a full and comprehensive ceasefire across all fronts in the Middle East, including Lebanon.

The comments come amid ongoing diplomatic activity following a U.S-Iran memorandum of understanding signed on Thursday, which calls for the cessation of hostilities, the opening of negotiation tracks, and progress toward ending conflicts across multiple fronts, including Lebanon.

The agreement also addresses Iran’s uranium enrichment activities and affirms Tehran’s commitment not to seek nuclear weapons.
