Ministro Andrés Bautista deja iniciados los trabajos de construcción del Jardín Botánico de La Maguana
San Juan.– The Administrative Minister of the Presidency, Andrés Bautista, led this Thursday the ceremony to begin the construction of the La Maguana Botanical Garden, a strategic work that will contribute to the protection of biodiversity, strengthen scientific research and environmental education, promote nature tourism and generate new opportunities for the economic development of San Juan and the entire Southern region.
The initiative was declared of high public interest by the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, through Decree No. 38-26, and is coordinated by a Management Committee designated to promote environmental sustainability and the comprehensive development of the province.
During a press conference held at the Provincial Government, Minister Bautista García highlighted that the project represents a commitment by President Luis Abinader to the protection of natural heritage and the generation of opportunities for research, ecological tourism and the growth of the region.
Likewise, he stated that the construction of the La Maguana Botanical Garden is part of the Government's comprehensive vision to promote the development of San Juan and the Southern region through initiatives that combine education, infrastructure, environmental protection and economic growth, adding to other strategic investments aimed at strengthening the potential of the area.
The official highlighted that the Botanical Garden will be a space of great historical, cultural, environmental and recreational value, designed for the enjoyment of San Juan residents and visitors from all over the country. He indicated that it will have sports areas, spaces for recreation and exercise, as well as natural environments that will promote contact with biodiversity and encourage tourism, contributing to the economic and social development of the province.
Bautista García assured that the Government has the necessary resources to carry out the work and recalled that the work began with the cleaning and preparation of the land. Furthermore, he expressed his confidence that the project will continue to expand with the incorporation of new areas and species, which is why he urged citizens to protect and preserve it as heritage for present and future generations.
He pointed out that the La Maguana Botanical Garden will be dedicated to the conservation of native and endemic species, environmental education, family recreation and scientific dissemination, consolidating itself as a reference for the sustainable development of the south of the country.
Significant fact for the Southern region
In his speech, Monsignor Tomás Alejo Concepción, president of the committee, described the start of construction as a momentous event for the Southern region and highlighted that the Botanical Garden will strengthen environmental conservation, ecological education and the projection of San Juan as a scientific and environmental reference. He also stated that the work will promote tourism, recreation and job creation.
Destined to become an ecological lung for the region
For his part, engineer Nelson Bautista, environmentalist and member of the project's board, explained that the Botanical Garden will be developed on land of approximately 800,000 square meters in the Mesopotamia area, destined to become an ecological lung for the region.
He indicated that the design responds to technical studies and consultations with different sectors and will include spaces for the conservation of species, research, recreation and environmental education, with the purpose of consolidating itself as a heritage for San Juan and the entire Southern region.
He explained that the master plan includes a modern Visitor Center, research and environmental education areas, specialized nurseries, interpretive trails, thematic gardens, cultural and recreational spaces, as well as the Pico Duarte Museum, the Pavilion of the Caciques and the Pavilion of Endemic Species. It will also include a butterfly garden, specialized gardens, nature observation areas and educational programs aimed at students, researchers and communities.
At the press conference, the director of National Assets, Rafael Burgos Gómez, reported that the institution opened an office in San Juan to receive and address claims related to the project, which is under the coordination of Dr. Rogelio. He specified that so far they have received eight files, which will be reviewed and evaluated individually.
Likewise, he explained that National Assets has the records and evidence of the processes carried out by previous administrations to resolve the situation of the people who resided in that area, including payments made and apartments delivered. In that sense, he assured that those who present claims will be able to go to the office, as long as they provide evidence that proves the time they have lived or resided in the place.

Destinado a convertirse en un pulmón ecológico para la región Por su parte, elingeniero Nelson Bautista,ambientalista y miembro del patronato del proyecto, explicó que el Jardín Botánico se desarrollará sobre un terreno de aproximadamente800,000 metros cuadradosen la zona de Mesopotamia, destinado a convertirse en unpulmón ecológico para la región. Indicó que el diseño responde aestudios técnicos y consultascon distintos sectores e incluirá espacios para la conservación de especies, investigación, recreación y educación ambiental, con el propósito de consolidarse como unpatrimonio para San Juany toda la región Sur. Explicó que el plan maestro contempla un modernoCentro de Visitantes, áreas de investigación y educación ambiental, viveros especializados, senderos interpretativos, jardines temáticos, espacios culturales y recreativos, así como elMuseo del Pico Duarte, el Pabellón de los Caciques y el Pabellón de las Especies Endémicas.También incluirá un mariposario, jardines especializados, zonas de observación de la naturaleza y programas educativos dirigidos aestudiantes, investigadores y comunidades. Precisó que hasta el momento han recibido ocho expedientes, los cuales seránrevisados y evaluados de manera individual. Asimismo, explicó que Bienes Nacionales cuenta con losregistros y evidenciasde los procesos realizados por administraciones anteriores para resolver la situación de las personas que residían en esa zona, incluyendopagos efectuados y apartamentos entregados. En ese sentido, aseguró que quienes presenten reclamaciones podrán acudir a la oficina, siempre que aporten pruebas que acrediten el tiempo que han vivido o residido en el lugar.
