The President of the Republic, José Antonio Kast, participated this Friday in the sea launch ceremony of the LPD 93 “Magallanes”, the first unit of the Escotillón IV Phase 1 Project of the Chilean Navy and one of the most relevant initiatives of the Continuous National Naval Construction Policy and Plan (PNCCN). The activity took place at the ASMAR Talcahuano facilities and was attended by the First Lady, María Pía Adriasola; the Minister of National Defense, Fernando Barros; the Commander in Chief of the Navy, Admiral Fernando Cabrera; civil and military authorities, as well as representatives of the national naval industry. During the ceremony, outstanding ASMAR workers who have participated in the construction of the unit were recognized, the ship was blessed, the baptism was carried out by its godmother, Marcela Larrañaga Martín, and later the traditional launching of the ship into the sea. In his speech, the President highlighted the strategic value of this project for the country and its contribution to the strengthening of national capabilities in defense, technological development and industry. The LPD 93 “Magallanes” is the first of two units contemplated in the Escotillón IV Phase 1 Project, which also considers the construction of the future “Rapa Nui” LPD. The initiative represents an approximate investment of 409.9 million dollars and is executed by ASMAR through a contract signed with the Chilean Navy in August 2022. The new multipurpose unit will have the capacity to develop amphibious operations, strategic transport of troops and cargo, logistical support to isolated areas, search and rescue operations, as well as humanitarian assistance in the face of emergencies and natural disasters. With 110 meters in length, 21.8 meters in width, an autonomy of 30 days and a range of 7,000 nautical miles, the “Magallanes” incorporates diesel-electric propulsion and will reach a maximum speed of 17 knots. It currently has more than 75% of construction progress and its operational delivery is projected for 2027. The launch into the sea marks the transition from the structural construction phase to the systems integration, equipment and testing stage, consolidating one of the most important industrial and technological projects developed by the country in terms of defense. The initiative strengthens national sovereignty and the operational capabilities of the Chilean Navy, while promoting the generation of specialized employment, the development of national suppliers and the strengthening of the industrial hub of the Region of Biobío, reaffirming the capacity of the State to execute long-term strategic projects linked to security, innovation and productive development.
