RÉUNION VIRTUELLE DE HAUT NIVEAU DES CHEFS D’ETAT ET DE GOUVERNEMENT AFRICAINS ET DES PARTENAIRES SUR LA FLAMBEE D’EBOLA (MALADIE À VIRUS BUNDIBUGYO)
This Tuesday, June 16, 2026, the Burundian Head of State and current President of the African Union, His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye, chaired a high-level virtual meeting at the Ntare Rushatsi Palace devoted to the situation of the Ebola epidemic on the African continent.
This meeting brought together several African Heads of State and Government as well as international partners engaged in the fight against health emergencies.
The discussions took place in the presence of the President of the African Union Commission, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, and the Director General of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), Dr Jean Kaseya.
In his speech, President Ndayishimiye reaffirmed the solidarity of the African Union towards the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Uganda, currently facing an outbreak of Ebola linked to the Bundibugyo strain.
The current President of the African Union His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye welcomed the commitment of the leaders and partners mobilized from Africa and other regions of the world, despite the constraints linked to the time difference.
His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye, Head of State of Burundi and current President of the African Union, launched an urgent appeal for the mobilization of political support as well as the financial, technical and logistical resources necessary to support the response efforts.
He stressed that only concerted, coordinated and reinforced action between Member States, technical and financial partners as well as regional organizations will make it possible to effectively contain the epidemic at its source, protect populations and health personnel, while sustainably consolidating the health resilience of the continent.
The discussions made it possible to assess the evolution of the epidemiological situation, identify persistent challenges and define priority measures to be implemented to prevent any cross-border spread of the disease.
At the end of this high-level virtual meeting, courageous decisions, meeting the challenges posed by this health emergency, were adopted by the various stakeholders. Participants pledged to intensify their efforts to interrupt any further chains of transmission and prevent any regional spread of the epidemic.
Closing the work, the Burundian Head of State and current President of the African Union urged all stakeholders concerned to immediately transform their commitments into concrete actions and tangible results.
“Every day of inaction is one day too many,” declared President Ndayishimiye, calling for rapid implementation of the decisions taken.
The current Chairman of the African Union also insisted on the need to strengthen cross-border coordination between affected countries and those exposed to risk, under the leadership of Africa CDC, with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Regional Economic Communities, in order to guarantee an effective, coordinated and united response across the African continent.

Ce mardi 16 juin 2026, le Chef de l’Etat burundais et Président en exercice de l’Union africaine, Son Excellence Evariste Ndayishimiye, a présidé au Palais Ntare Rushatsi, une réunion virtuelle de haut niveau consacrée à la situation de l’épidémie d’Ebola sur le continent africain. Dans son allocution, le Président Ndayishimiye a réaffirmé la solidarité de l’Union africaine envers la République Démocratique du Congo et la République d’Ouganda, actuellement confrontées à une flambée d’Ebola liée à la souche Bundibugyo. Le Président en exercice de l’Union africaine Son Excellence Evariste Ndayishimiye a salué l’engagement des dirigeants et partenaires mobilisés depuis l’Afrique et d’autres régions du monde, malgré les contraintes liées au décalage horaire. Son Excellence Evariste Ndayishimiye, Chef de l’Etat burundais et Président en exercice de l’Union africaine a lancé un appel pressant à la mobilisation des soutiens politiques ainsi que des ressources financières, techniques et logistiques nécessaires pour soutenir les efforts de riposte. Il a souligné que seule une action concertée, coordonnée et renforcée entre les Etats membres, les partenaires techniques et financiers ainsi que les organisations régionales permettra de contenir efficacement l’épidémie à sa source, de protéger les populations et les personnels de santé, tout en consolidant durablement la résilience sanitaire du continent. Les discussions ont permis d’évaluer l’évolution de la situation épidémiologique, d’identifier les défis persistants et de définir les mesures prioritaires à mettre en œuvre pour prévenir toute propagationtransfrontalière de la maladie. A l’issue de cette réunion virtuelle de haut niveau, des décisions courageuses, à la hauteur des défis posés par cette urgence sanitaire, ont été adoptées par les différentes parties prenantes. Les participants se sont engagés à intensifier leurs efforts afin d’interrompre toute nouvelle chaîne de transmission et de prévenir toute propagation régionale de l’épidémie. Clôturant les travaux, le Chef de l’Etat burundais et Président en exercice de l’Union africaine a exhorté l’ensemble des acteurs concernés à transformer sans délai leurs engagements en actions concrètes et en résultats tangibles. « Chaque jour d’inaction est un jour de trop », a déclaré, le Président Ndayishimiye appelant ainsi à une mise en œuvre rapide des décisions prises. Le Président en exercice de l’Union africaine a également insisté sur la nécessité de renforcer la coordination transfrontalière entre les pays touchés et ceux exposés au risque, sous le leadership d’Africa CDC, avec l’appui de l’Organisation Mondiale de la Santé (OMS) et des Communautés Economiques Régionales, afin de garantir une riposte efficace, coordonnée et solidaire à l’échelle du continent africain.
