President Cyril Ramaphosa delivers opening remarks at the Kenya State Visit. (2)

I'm especially pleased by the proposal to establish a South Africa-Kenya Joint Business Council, which would give our private sector a stronger voice in shaping trade and investment. Our people-to-people ties are flourishing. The decision that we took together in 2022, where you insisted, Mr. President, that you would not allow me to leave Kenya without us reaching agreement on the visa-free access issue, was one of our best decisions because it immediately led to instant implementation. So, much as I felt you twisted my arm, I think it was a good twisting of the arm because both countries are benefiting now. Tourism, business, travel, and cultural exchange have grown. This is clear demonstration of how reducing barriers can bring Africans closer together and advance the vision of Africa or Agenda 2063 to build the Africa we want. Trade between our countries continues to grow as well. Kenyan exports to South Africa are expanding, creating greater balance and mutual benefit. It is actually a joy to get into stores and supermarkets and be able to see products made in Kenya. Tea, coffee, and many others. We are proud of the milestone we achieved when South Africa and Kenya launched the first consignment traded under the Africa Continental Free Trade Area. This shows that the AFCTA is not just an inspiration. It is a living instrument that is already transforming intra-African trade. There is still much potential to be unlocked in this regard. We must continue to improve logistics to facilitate easier movement of business people and promote investment partnerships. Opportunities abound in infrastructure, in automotive manufacturing, agro-processing, digital innovation, renewable energy, health care, and education. I welcome also the growing cooperation between Kenya Airways and the South African Airways, which is improving connectivity and strengthening tourism and business exchange. We recognize Kenya's leadership in digital innovation and renewable energy, areas where our collaboration can make a real difference to Africa's development and resilience.
