Ministro de Salud destaca avances que consolidan a Santiago como referente nacional en salud pública preventiva
Santiago.– The Minister of Health, Víctor Atallah, highlighted the progress made in the province of Santiago between the years 2020 and 2026, which have allowed it to be consolidated as a national reference in preventive public health, thanks to the strengthening of the health stewardship, the expansion of prevention actions and the direct protection of hundreds of thousands of citizens.
During the Council of Ministers held this Sunday in Santiago, and headed by President Luis Abinader, the head of Health presented the main results achieved by the sector in the province, highlighting the advances in vaccination, epidemiological surveillance, vector control, environmental health, quality of services and institutional strengthening.
Among the main achievements presented is the protection of more than 1.7 million people through vaccination days, with the distribution of more than two million doses of the national scheme and a cumulative investment of more than RD 600 million in the vaccination network.
Likewise, some 437,582 people were benefited through vector control actions aimed at preventing diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, strengthening community protection and reducing health risks in different sectors of the province.
Atallah reported that one of the results with the greatest human impact has been the sustained reduction in infant, neonatal and maternal mortality. Between 2020 and 2024, the infant mortality rate decreased by 38.9%, while the neonatal mortality rate decreased by 36.8%. Likewise, the maternal mortality ratio showed a reduction of 27.5%, reflecting the strengthening of care services for mothers and newborns.
The minister pointed out that these advances represent hundreds of lives saved and demonstrate the strengthening of the health system's response capacity for the benefit of the population.
The official also highlighted that epidemiological surveillance and vector control have played a fundamental role in community protection. More than 207,000 home visits made it possible to eliminate nearly 187,000 mosquito breeding sites and treat more than 247,000 water tanks, contributing to significantly reducing the risk of diseases such as dengue in Santiago homes.
Within the framework of the “One Health” approach, the prevention of zoonotic diseases was also strengthened through the vaccination of 433,877 animals against rabies and the immunization of 15,452 people. These actions were complemented with environmental sanitation, health surveillance and risk control initiatives that benefited more than 72,000 citizens.
Atallah also highlighted the improvements achieved in the quality and safety of health services. During the period analyzed, 1,964 quality monitoring was carried out, 1,160 health centers were enabled, and more than 130 standards, protocols, and guides were developed aimed at strengthening patient care and safety. In addition, actions related to safe blood generated an estimated saving of RD 10.9 million for the population.
In terms of school health, the minister reported that 147,374 students were benefited through deworming sessions, while the coverage of the program increased from 52.6% to 76.8%. In parallel, 10,631 people receive cardiovascular monitoring through the Hearts strategy, strengthening the prevention and control of chronic non-communicable diseases.
"Strengthening the health stewardship does not only consist of regulating services. It involves anticipating risks, coordinating sectors, strengthening communities and guaranteeing that health comes before disease. The results achieved in Santiago demonstrate that prevention continues to be the most effective tool to protect life and improve the quality of life of the population," said Atallah.
The minister stated that these advances reflect greater institutional capacity to respond to the needs of citizens and consolidate Santiago as one of the provinces with the best health indicators.
