SNS inaugura Unidad de Salud Mental en el Hospital Inmaculada Concepción de Cotuí
Sánchez Ramírez.- The executive director of the National Health Service (SNS), Dr. Julio Landrón, inaugurated the new Mental Health Unit of the Inmaculada Concepción Hospital, in the municipality of Cotuí, Sánchez Ramírez province.
During the inauguration and ribbon-cutting ceremony, Dr. Landrón highlighted that mental health constitutes one of the priority axes of the government headed by President Luis Abinader, due to the growing impact of mental disorders worldwide.
"At least one member of the family has a depression problem, an alcoholism problem or a dependency problem. It is important to have teams and structures at the national level that allow us to follow up on these problems that we often want to deny," said the head of the SNS.
Landrón also warned about the high incidence of suicide among young people between 15 and 19 years old, noting that the Government has placed special emphasis on strengthening mental health services throughout the country.
The official explained that many patients with mental disorders have historically been excluded from hospital centers, which is why the SNS works so that each hospital in the country has a crisis care unit.
“We want all hospitals to have spaces with psychiatrists, psychologists and containment teams, where anyone going through a crisis can be cared for, admitted, treated and subsequently reintegrated into society,” he indicated.
The new unit at the Inmaculada Concepción Hospital has four beds and is part of the national plan to strengthen mental health and psychological care services.
Landrón reported that, with the integration of several mental health units in hospitals and penitentiary centers, the Public Health Network currently has 236 beds for the care of patients with mental disorders throughout the national territory. Likewise, he assured that before the end of the year the goal is to exceed 500 beds for crisis care, which will allow the coverage of these specialized services to be significantly expanded.
The director of the SNS reported that the Government is currently developing several infrastructure and specialized mental health care projects, including a psychosocial center in Higüey and another in Moca, as well as the recovery of the Padre Billini Psychosocial Rehabilitation Center (old 28), through the Ministry of Housing, Habitat and Buildings (Mivhed) and the establishment of a child and pediatric psychosocial center in the facilities of the José Manuel Rodríguez Hospital. In addition, he announced that in the coming months the work to strengthen the national mental health network will continue with new interventions and incorporations of specialized centers to expand the response capacity and care for the population.
Follow-up from primary care
Landrón stressed that the national strategy is not limited to hospitals, but includes the strengthening of primary care to provide continuous follow-up to patients with mental disorders.
“We have the duty to have psychologists in first-level care centers, to guarantee monitoring, free medications and compliance with medical appointments for these patients,” he stated.
With the opening of this unit in Cotuí, the SNS seeks to expand access to specialized mental health services and reduce barriers to care for the population of Sánchez Ramírez and nearby areas.

El funcionario explicó que muchos pacientes con trastornos mentales han sidohistóricamente excluidosde los centros hospitalarios, por lo que el SNS trabaja para quecada hospital del paíscuente con una unidad de atención en crisis. “Queremos que en todos los hospitales existan espacios con psiquiatras, psicólogos y equipos de contención, donde cualquier persona que atraviese una crisis pueda ser atendida, ingresada, tratada y posteriormente reintegrada a la sociedad”,indicó. La nueva unidad delHospital Inmaculada Concepcióncuenta con cuatro camas y forma parte del plan nacional de fortalecimiento de los servicios desalud mental y atención psicológica. Landrón informó que, con la integración de varias unidades de salud mental en hospitales y centros penitenciarios, laRed Pública de Saluddispone actualmente de236 camaspara la atención de pacientes con trastornos mentales en todo el territorio nacional. Asimismo, aseguró que antes de finalizar el año la meta essuperar las 500 camaspara la atención en crisis, lo que permitirá ampliar significativamente la cobertura de estos servicios especializados. El director del SNS informó que el Gobierno desarrolla actualmentevarios proyectosde infraestructura y atención especializada en salud mental, entre ellos un centro psicosocialen Higüey y otro en Moca, así como la recuperación delCentro de Rehabilitación Psicosocial Padre Billini(antiguo 28), a través delMinisterio de Vivienda, Hábitat y Edificaciones(Mivhed) y la habilitación de unpsicosocial infantil y pediátricoen las instalaciones delHospital José Manuel Rodríguez Jimenes(antiguo Santo Socorro). Además, anunció que en los próximos meses continuarán los trabajos defortalecimiento de la red nacional de salud mentalcon nuevas intervenciones e incorporaciones de centros especializados para ampliar la capacidad de respuesta y atención a la población. Seguimiento desde la atención primaria Landrón subrayó que laestrategia nacionalno se limita a los hospitales, sino que incluye el fortalecimiento de la atención primaria para darseguimiento continuoa los pacientes con trastornos mentales. “Tenemos el deber de contar con psicólogos y psicólogas en los centros de primer nivel de atención, para garantizar el seguimiento, los medicamentos gratuitos y el cumplimiento de las citas médicas de estos pacientes”,afirmó. Con la apertura de esta unidad en Cotuí, el SNS buscaampliar el accesoa servicios especializados de salud mental yreducir las barreras de atenciónpara la población de Sánchez Ramírez y zonas cercanas.
