Study suggests removing sucrose may disrupt gut health

Kuwait City, June 14 (SANA)Researchers at Kuwait’s Dasman Diabetes Institute have found that completely removing sucrose from a low-fat diet may negatively affect gut health and metabolic function, according to findings presented at ENDO 2026, the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society in Chicago.

The study, reported byScience Daily, involved laboratory mice observed over a 16-week period and compared the effects of a sucrose-free low-fat diet with those of a similar diet containing sucrose.

Researchers found poorer glucose regulation, increased insulin resistance and disruptions in gut microbiota among mice fed the sucrose-free diet.

The findings also showed higher levels of inflammation and metabolic disturbances, suggesting that eliminating sucrose entirely may have unintended effects on gut and immune health.

The team said the results highlight the importance of balanced dietary patterns that support a healthy gut microbiome, arguing that overall diet quality and nutritional diversity may be more important than completely excluding specific ingredients.

The study comes ashealth authoritiescontinue to encourage reductions in added sugar consumption to help prevent obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Researchers said achieving dietary balance, rather than eliminating individual foods, may play an important role in supporting metabolic and digestive health.
