Syria, Arab Atomic Energy Agency discuss enhancing technical cooperation

Damascus, June 14 (SANA)Chairman of the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission, Mudar al-Okla, discussed with Director-General of theArab Atomic Energy Agency, Salem al-Hamdi, ways to enhance technical cooperation and expand joint training and scientific activities in the field of peaceful uses of atomic energy.

During the meeting, held in Damascus on Sunday, both sides also discussed supporting qualification, training, and scientific research.

Al-Okla affirmed the commission’s readiness to deepen cooperation and contribute to building a more advanced Arab scientific future, noting that the visit reflects the strength of joint scientific and technical cooperation, exchange of expertise, and development of scientific initiatives.

For his part, al-Hamdi expressed pride in Syria’s return to the framework of joint Arab action, stressing that protecting sensitive nuclear information and radioactive assets, and ensuring safe and sustainable operation, have become national and regional responsibilities requiring the highest levels of preparedness.

Al-Hamdi added that a joint Arab training course on cybersecurity began on Sunday at the headquarters of theSyrian Atomic Energy Commission, aiming to establish an integrated cybersecurity protection system covering nuclear facilities, regulatory bodies, risk and incident management, supply chain security, and the development of a sustainable institutional culture.

Deputy Scientific Director of the commission, Hani Zidan, said the course, which includes trainees from Syria and other Arab countries, aims to strengthen institutional capacities and qualify personnel capable of addressing cybersecurity challenges, noting that cooperation between the two bodies falls within the development of peaceful uses of atomic energy and scientific research.

The Syrian Atomic Energy Commission was established in 1976 and began its institutional activities in 1981 as a government body responsible for atomic energy affairs and their peaceful applications in Syria.
