Ministerie van LVV start Fase 2 van ChinaAid-landbouwontwikkelingsproject
The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (LVV) held a crucial meeting with representatives of the Chinese company Jiangxi Green Recycling Co., Ltd. on Monday, June 8, 2026. During this meeting, the official starting signal was given for the operationalization of the second phase of the Agricultural Technical Cooperation project (ChinaAid) in Suriname. The project is aimed at large-scale technological support, training and the introduction of new crops to take Surinamese agricultural production to a higher level.
The Chinese expertise team arrived in Suriname on May 27, 2026, which immediately started the renewed cooperation in a constructive manner. Over the next three years, seven long-term experts and two short-term experts from China will provide permanent technical assistance and capacity strengthening to Suriname.
Phase 2 of the project has an ambitious agenda. Intensive efforts will be made on reproduction, demonstration training and the further expansion of strategic crops such as corn and soy. In addition, research is starting into the feasibility and cultivation of new fruit and vegetable varieties on Surinamese soil, including jackfruit, apricots and watermelons.
To facilitate this agricultural modernization, the installation of a new 500 kV transformer has been made a priority; an infrastructural upgrade that is essential for the continuity and further development of the sector. For the joint implementation of the project during this three-year period, there will also be targeted cooperation in recruiting and deploying technically trained local personnel.
This initiative is the direct follow-up to the successfully completed first phase of the Suriname-China Agricultural Technical Cooperation Center (SATCC), which started on September 1, 2022 under the implementation of Hunan Linshi Agricultural Service Co., Ltd. The results from that first period are significant: 450 students successfully completed 11 types of training, 25 vegetable variants were successfully tried, and the findings were recorded in 17 research reports. In Phase 2, this foundation will be used to structurally offer new agricultural training courses to Surinamese farmers and agro-entrepreneurs.
The leadership of the Ministry of LVV underlined the great importance of this partnership. The project not only strengthens Surinamese food security, but also strengthens the bilateral and friendly ties between Suriname and the People's Republic of China, which have now existed for more than forty years. The parties will meet again in the coming weeks to further fine-tune the technical details and precisely coordinate the concrete implementation steps. Both actors are committed to making this project a textbook example of sustainable and mutually beneficial international cooperation.

Tijdens deze bijeenkomst is het officiële startschot gegeven voor de operationalisering van de tweede fase van het Agricultural Technical Cooperation-project (ChinaAid) in Suriname. Het project is gericht op grootschalige technologische ondersteuning, trainingen en de introductie van nieuwe gewassen om de Surinaamse agrarische productie naar een hoger niveau te tillen. Het Chinese expertiseteam is op 27 mei 2026 in Suriname gearriveerd, waarmee de hernieuwde samenwerking direct constructief van start is gegaan. De komende drie jaar zullen zeven experts voor lange tijd twee experts voor korte tijd vanuit China permanent technische bijstand en capaciteitsversterking aan Suriname leveren. Fase 2 van het project kent een ambitieuze agenda. Er zal intensief worden ingezet op reproductie, demonstratietrainingen en de verdere areaaluitbreiding van strategische gewassen zoals maïs en soja. Daarnaast start er een onderzoek naar de haalbaarheid en teelt van nieuwe fruit- en groentesoorten op Surinaamse bodem, waaronder jackfruit, abrikozen en watermeloenen. Om deze agrarische modernisering te faciliteren, is de installatie van een nieuwe 500 kV transformator als prioriteit gesteld; een infrastructurele upgrade die essentieel is voor de continuïteit en verdere ontwikkeling van de sector. Voor de gezamenlijke uitvoering van het project in deze driejarige periode zal er bovendien gericht worden samengewerkt bij het werven en inzetten van technisch geschoold lokaal personeel. Dit initiatief is het directe vervolg op de succesvol afgeronde eerste fase van het Suriname-China Agricultural Technical Cooperation Center (SATCC), dat destijds op 1 september 2022 van start ging onder uitvoering van Hunan Linshi Agricultural Service Co., Ltd. De resultaten uit die eerste periode zijn veelzeggend, 450 cursisten hebben met succes 11 soorten trainingen afgerond, 25 groente varianten zijn succesvol uitgeprobeerd, en in 17 onderzoeksrapporten zijn de bevindingen vastgelegd. In Fase 2 zal dit fundament worden benut om structureel nieuwe landbouwtrainingen aan te bieden aan Surinaamse boeren en agro-ondernemers. Vanuit de leiding van het ministerie van LVV werd het grote belang van dit partnerschap onderstreept. Het project versterkt niet alleen de Surinaamse voedselzekerheid, maar verstevigt ook de bilaterale en vriendschappelijke banden tussen Suriname en de Volksrepubliek China, die inmiddels al meer dan veertig jaar standhouden. De komende weken komen de partijen opnieuw bijeen om de technische details verder te finetunen en de concrete implementatiestappen nauwkeurig op elkaar af te stemmen. Beide actoren zijn vastbesloten om van dit project een schoolvoorbeeld te maken van duurzame en wederzijds voordelige internationale samenwerking.
