Presidente Abinader supervisa avances del Monorriel de Santiago
Santiago.-President Luis Abinader conducted a supervision tour of the Santiago Monorail workshops, whose civil work would be completed in the month of August of this year and then, during the last quarter of the year, give way to the dynamic tests of train movement on the E1-E11 route.
Also, for the month of December, new train units will arrive to begin what is known as the blank march or trial period of this important mobility infrastructure that will transform the urban transportation system of the capital of Cibao.
Accompanied by Jhael Isa Tavárez, executive director of the Trust for the Development of Mass Transportation (Fitram), and the Minister of Public Works, Eduardo Estrella, the head of state toured the monorail workshops and the underground station located in the monumental area, which was conceived in order to preserve the visual of this area in which the Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration and the gardens of the Gran Teatro del Cibao, thus mitigating the impact of the work on Monumental Avenue.
Jhael Isa Tavárez reported that, 4 years and 72 days after the works began, the Santiago Monorail presents an overall progress of 92.6%, reflecting the sustained compliance with the different stages of construction, installation and commissioning of the systems that will make up the railway operation.
Among the main achievements is the total manufacturing of all the structural elements required for the project, completed in accordance with the established technical specifications.
Among the progress of the project, the construction and installation of 100% of the viaduct piles stood out, which is equivalent to 4,246 units, and the total beams manufactured for 1,132 units, which constitutes an industrial milestone.
Likewise, the installation of 679 piers (support columns) and 619 capitals (beam support) and 637 footings was reported. “The delay in the construction and installation of these elements is due to the modification in the route of the work in Reparto Universitario, a route that was modified at the request of the community,” said Isa.
Likewise, he reported that work continues to be carried out around the electromechanical and railway phase, including the implementation of the electrical power network and associated equipment, the installation and configuration of signaling systems, integration of operational and backup telecommunications, logistical and technical preparation for the incorporation of rolling stock and the coordination of the different systems that will allow safe and efficient operation.
As part of the work in the monumental area, 180 parking spaces were recovered that can be used by users to leave their vehicles and board the monorail at that station.
During the tour, the executive director of Fitram, Jhael Isa Tavarez, highlighted that the project is progressing according to the established schedule and is in a decisive stage for its completion. Likewise, he highlighted that the Santiago Monorail will represent a transcendental change for urban mobility, by offering a modern, safe, efficient and sustainable system that will contribute significantly to the reduction of travel times and improve the quality of life of thousands of citizens.
With this work, Santiago is on its way to having a state-of-the-art mass transportation system that will strengthen connectivity between the main sectors of the city, promote the economic and urban development of the region and consolidate the comprehensive transformation of mobility in Cibao.
The supervision carried out by President Abinader reaffirms the Government's commitment to continue promoting high-impact infrastructure projects that contribute to the well-being of the population and the sustainable development of the country.
The Santiago Monorail is a high-tech rail transportation system, with the capacity to transport 20,000 passengers per hour in each direction, which is equivalent to 200,000 passengers per day.
It moves on a reinforced concrete rail structure, on a viaduct that will cross the entire city, from Cienfuegos to Beijing, on a 15-kilometer route.
The system is made up of 13 kilometers of viaduct, 3.2 kilometers of workshop yard, with 14 stations and a central terminal for integration with the cable car.
The Santiago Monorail along with line 1 of the cable car make up the sectors with the largest population and the two main workplaces in the city.
This project will directly impact 501,094 beneficiaries, reducing 30% of household spending on transportation, reducing vehicle congestion, increasing productivity, and decreasing environmental impact.

Dentro de los avances del proyecto, se destacó la construcción e instalación del100 % de los pilotes del viaducto, lo que equivale a4,246 unidades, y el total de vigas fabricadas para 1,132 unidades, lo que constituye unhito industrial. Asimismo, se informó de la instalación de 679 pilas (columnas de soporte) y 619 capiteles (soporte de vigas) y 637 zapatas. “El retraso que presentan la construcción e instalación de estos elementos se debe a la modificación en el trayecto de la obra en Reparto Universitario, trazado que se modificó a solicitud de la comunidad”,manifestó Isa. De igual manera, informó que continúan desarrollándose trabajos en torno a la faseelectromecánica y ferroviaria, incluyendo la implementación de la red de alimentación eléctrica y los equipos asociados, la instalación y configuración de los sistemas de señalización, integración de las telecomunicaciones operativas y de respaldo, la preparación logística y técnica para la incorporación del material rodante y la coordinación de los distintos sistemas que permitirán unaoperación segura y eficiente. Como parte de los trabajos en el área monumental, se recuperaron180 parqueosque podrán ser utilizados por los usuarios para dejar sus vehículos y abordar el monorriel en esa estación. Durante el recorrido,el director ejecutivo del Fitram, Jhael Isa Tavarez, destacó que el proyecto avanza conforme al cronograma establecido y se encuentra en unaetapa decisiva para su culminación. Asimismo, resaltó que el Monorriel de Santiago representará uncambio trascendental para la movilidad urbana, al ofrecer un sistemamoderno, seguro, eficiente y sostenibleque contribuirá significativamente a lareducción de los tiempos de desplazamientoy mejorar la calidad de vida demiles de ciudadanos.
