Sector ganadero contará con ₡10 mil millones para financiar mejoras en competitividad
MAG enables a compensation fund to maintain a rate equal to or below 8%.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and the Development Banking System came together to offer livestock producers a financing plan, appropriate to production conditions, that also allows them to reconvert their production units and improve their competitiveness.
This is an initial fund of ₡10 billion, for the cattle, goat, buffalo and sheep farming sectors, which will be placed at a basic passive rate plus 3 percent, with a maximum limit of 8%, for a term of up to 8 years.
"If the rate tends to rise above 8%, the MAG will accumulate a compensation fund that it has, to cover the difference. In this way, producers know that the rate will not increase above 8%. It can be below, or equal to, but not beyond 8%, during the term of the credit," explained the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Víctor Julio Carvajal Porras, who added that "never before has the sector had a similar financing plan, which is truly adapted to the conditions of the productive activity and provides peace of mind to producers, which will allow them to make a qualitative and quantitative leap at the level of competitiveness.”
Interested people will be able to use the credit to reconvert their production unit, acquire bellies, build infrastructure, improve pastures and genetic material, traceability, health, among other investments.
This action is part of the competitiveness axis of the Policy for the Agricultural Sector, as well as the Strategy for Strengthening the Livestock Sector. Other actions developed within the strategy are the implementation of the Bovine Traceability System, the simplification of procedures and rate adjustments in SENASA, as well as the facilitation of veterinary services.

Se trata de un fondo inicial de ₡10 mil millones, para los sectores de ganadería bovina, caprina, bufalina y ovina, el cual se colocará a tasa básica pasiva más 3 por ciento, con un tope máximo de 8%, a un plazo de hasta 8 años. “Si la tasa tendiera a subir por encima del 8%, el MAG acAvará un fondo de compensación con el que cuenta, para cubrir la diferencia. De esta forma, los productores saben que la tasa no les incrementará por encima del 8%. Puede estar por debajo, o igual, pero no más allá del 8%, durante el plazo del crédito”, explicó el ministro de Agricultura y Ganadería, Víctor Julio Carvajal Porras, quien agregó que “nunca antes el sector ha contado con un plan de financiamiento similar, que se adecue realmente a las condiciones de la acAvidad producAva y brinde tranquilidad a los productores, lo que les permiArá dar un salto cualitaAvo y cuanAtaAvo a nivel de compeAAvidad”. Las personas interesadas podrán hacer uso del crédito para reconverAr su unidad producAva, adquirir vientres, construir infraestructura, mejoramiento de pastos y material genéAco, trazabilidad, sanidad, entre otras inversiones. Esta acción se enmarca en el eje de compeAAvidad de la PolíAca para el Sector Agropecuario, así como la Estrategia para el Fortalecimiento del Sector Ganadero, Otras acciones desarrolladas dentro de la estrategia son la implementación del Sistema de Rastreabilidad Bovina, la simplificación de trámites y ajustes de tarifas en SENASA, así como la facilitación de servicios veterinarios.
