Central government budget

An important part of the Government’s work to realise its policies is to draw up proposals on the central government budget. The proposals are submitted in government bills to the Riksdag.

On 13 April, the Government presented its Spring Budget. In an uncertain international situation, Sweden continues to stand strong with an economy that is trending upward. The budget includes measures worth SEK 7.7 billion in 2026 and focuses on building a stronger and more secure Sweden.

In the spring, the Minister for Finance submits the Government’s Spring Fiscal Policy Bill and a Spring Amending Budget to the Riksdag. On 13 April, the Government submitted its Spring Fiscal Policy Bill for 2026 and its Spring Amending Budget Bill for 2026 to the Riksdag.Later in the year, the more comprehensive Budget Bill and an Autumn Amending Budget are submitted. The Government’s Budget Bill for 2026 was presented to the Riksdag on 22 September 2025.

New nuclear power is a long-term undertaking for society. It requires investments from both the private sector and the state. In the Spring Amending Budget for 2026, the Government proposes state majority ownership of Videberg Kraft AB and that the state assumes a role in the financing of the future system for radioactive waste management and spent nuclear fuel by reducing risk for those who make the initial investments. Those who produce the waste should also continue to be responsible for their share of the costs.

(New version) The prevailing security situation is more serious than it has been in several decades, and Russia constitutes a multi-dimensional threat to Sweden. The Government is therefore implementing historic investments in defence. Together with previous budgetary expansions, appropriations increase by SEK 26.6 billion in the Budget Bill for 2026. The Swedish Government has presented its largest military support package to Ukraine to date, valued at almost SEK 16 billion. Ukraine has requested capabilities related to air defence, artillery, satellite communication, and naval capabilities. Together with the support package announced earlier this year, Swedish support to Ukraine amounts to approximately SEK 29.5 billion in 2025. Sweden’s military support since 2022 thus totals about SEK 80 billion.
