La República Dominicana concluye presidencia pro tempore de la Centroestad fortaleciendo la cooperación estadística regional
Santo Domingo.– The Dominican Republic, through the National Statistics Office (ONE), carried out the official transfer of the pro tempore presidency of the Central American Statistical Commission of the Central American Integration System (Centroestad) to the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB), during the celebration of the XXXI Ordinary Meeting of this regional organization, held on June 10, 2026, in Santo Domingo.
The pro tempore presidency of the Centroestad was held by the general director of the National Statistics Office (ONE), Mildred Martínez, who led the coordination of the work of the regional commission during the first half of 2026. The transfer was assumed by the general director of the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB), Diana Lisa Castillo-Trejo, who will be in charge of the regional coordination of the commission for the next period.
The XXXI Ordinary Meeting brought together directors and representatives of the National Statistical Offices of Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and the Dominican Republic, together with regional and international organizations, to follow up on initiatives aimed at strengthening regional statistical cooperation, the modernization of information systems and the exchange of experiences between the member countries of the Central American Integration System (SICA).
The meeting also included the participation of representatives of the General Secretariat of SICA (SG-SICA), the World Bank, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Nutrition Institute of Central America and Panama (Incap), the Central American and Dominican Republic Forum on Drinking Water and Sanitation (Focard-APS) and the Technical Secretariat of the Council of Ministers of Women of Central America and the Dominican Republic (STM-COMMCA).
As part of the agenda developed in Santo Domingo, the participating delegations reviewed the progress and compliance of the work plan of the Technical Administrative Secretariat of the Central American Statistical Commission of SICA (Centroestad) corresponding to the period January-June 2026. During the day, the main achievements achieved, the pending challenges and the strategic actions planned to continue strengthening regional statistical cooperation and integration were evaluated.
Likewise, experiences were shared on statistical information systems, gender statistics and innovation applied to the production of official data.
During this meeting, the exercises carried out by the countries to calculate the food balance sheet were presented, a tool that strengthens the availability of information to support the formulation of public policies and evidence-based planning.

Likewise, experiences related to the strengthening of statistical information systems, innovation applied to data production and the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence to optimize processes, improve the quality of information and expand the analysis capabilities of national statistical offices were shared.
The ONE highlighted that the Centroestad continues to consolidate itself as a strategic space to promote technical cooperation, the exchange of knowledge and the development of joint initiatives that contribute to the strengthening of official statistics in the countries of Central America and the Dominican Republic.
The implementation of these activities counted on the international cooperation of the Republic of Korea, through the Korea-SICA Fund.

La reunión contó además con la participación de representantes de la Secretaría General del SICA (SG-SICA), el Banco Mundial, la Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe (Cepal), el Instituto de Nutrición de Centro América y Panamá (Incap), el Foro Centroamericano y República Dominicana de Agua Potable y Saneamiento (Focard-APS) y la Secretaría Técnica del Consejo de Ministras de la Mujer de Centroamérica y República Dominicana (STM-COMMCA). Como parte de la agenda desarrollada en Santo Domingo, las delegaciones participantes pasaron revista alavance y cumplimiento del plan de trabajode la Secretaría Técnica Administrativa de la Comisión Centroamericana de Estadística del SICA (Centroestad) correspondiente al períodoenero-junio de 2026. Durante la jornada, se evaluaron los principaleslogros alcanzados, los desafíos pendientes y las acciones estratégicasprevistas para continuar fortaleciendo la cooperación y la integración estadística regional. Asimismo, se compartieron experiencias sobre sistemas deinformación estadística, estadísticas de género e innovaciónaplicada a la producción de datos oficiales. Durante este encuentro, se presentaron los ejercicios realizados por los países para el cálculo de la hoja de balance de alimentos, una herramienta que fortalece la disponibilidad de información para apoyar la formulación depolíticas públicas y la planificación basada en evidencia. La ONE destacó que la Centroestad continúa consolidándose como un espacio estratégico para promover la cooperación técnica, el intercambio de conocimientos y el desarrollo deiniciativas conjuntasque contribuyan al fortalecimiento de laestadística oficialen los países deCentroamérica y República Dominicana.
