Ocho nuevos Centros Cívicos por la Paz beneficiarán a miles de niños y jóvenes
• Buildings join seven Civic Centers for Peace that already exist, all in areas where their inhabitants are exposed to high risk
San José, April 3, 2024. The Chaves Robles Administration, with the Ministry of Justice and Peace as the coordinating institution, is working quickly on the construction of eight Civic Centers for Peace in the cantons of Roble de Puntarenas, Corredores, Limón, Liberia, Pérez Zeledón, Goicoechea, Alajuela and Pavas in San José.
The Civic Centers for Peace are physical places built by the Government with financing from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), in association with local governments and with the participation of other State institutions.
Here, children and adolescents under 18 years of age, exposed to social risks, have a safe space for their comprehensive training through education, technology, art, sports and recreation.
Currently, there is a Civic Center in Garabito, Aguas Zarcas, Santa Cruz, La Capri, Cartago, Guararí and Pococí where users learn about music, painting, theater, sports and where they also receive information on domestic violence, gender violence, teenage pregnancy, violence in educational centers, violence associated with micro-trafficking of prohibited substances, when they participate in the workshops.
The Minister of Justice and Peace, Gerald Campos Valverde highlights the effort made in terms of preventing violence and promoting social peace with the development of this important program, through the Vice Ministry of Peace.
"One more child or young person in a Civic Center is one less adult in a prison. Let's work on minors at risk to change their mentality. Let's work on violence prevention and eradicate any of its manifestations, with primary care that generates opportunities for inclusion and continues to transform lives," said the leader.
Each Civic Center for Peace represents an approximate investment of four million dollars. About 12,000 children and adolescents benefit annually.

Actualmente, hay un Centro Cívico en Garabito, Aguas Zarcas, Santa Cruz, La Capri, Cartago, Guararí y Pococí donde los usuarios aprenden sobre música, pintura, teatro, deporte y donde además, reciben información sobre violencia intrafamiliar, violencia de género, embarazo en adolescentes, violencia en centros educativos, violencia asociada al microtráfico de sustancias prohibidas, cuando participan de los talleres. El ministro de Justicia y Paz, Gerald Campos Valverde destaca el esfuerzo que se hace en materia de prevención de la violencia y promoción de la paz social con el desarrollo de este importante programa, a través del Viceministerio de Paz. “Un niño o joven más en un Centro Cívico es un adulto menos en una cárcel. Trabajemos en los menores con riesgo para cambiar su mentalidad. Trabajemos en prevención de la violencia y erradiquemos cualquiera de sus manifestaciones, con atención primaria que genere oportunidades de inclusión y siga transformando vidas”, señaló el jerarca. Cada centro Cívico por la Paz, representa una inversión aproximada de cuatro millones de dólares. Anualmente se benefician unos 12.000 niños, niñas y adolescentes.
