Ministerio de Medio Ambiente anuncia aumento salarial para fortalecer el cuerpo de guardaparques
Santo Domingo.-The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources announced, in an event headed by the Vice President of the Republic, Raquel Peña, a historic investment aimed at the comprehensive strengthening of the Dominican park ranger corps, one of the most far-reaching actions carried out in favor of the personnel responsible for caring for the country's protected areas and natural resources.
This initiative is part of the actions promoted by Minister Paíno Henríquez to improve the working and operational conditions of park rangers, considered the main guardians of biodiversity and the national natural heritage.
As part of this effort, the institution provided a salary increase of RD 5,000 per month for each park ranger, accompanied by a large supply of equipment that will significantly strengthen surveillance and monitoring of protected areas.
During the announcement, Henríquez highlighted that the conservation of natural resources depends largely on the capacity and working conditions of those who have the responsibility of protecting them. "This is an investment in the people who dedicate their lives to protecting our forests, our coasts, our watersheds and our biodiversity. Strengthening our park rangers is strengthening the State's capacity to preserve the natural heritage of all Dominicans," he expressed.
Likewise, he added that "our park rangers are the first line of defense of Dominican nature. Every improvement in their working conditions is a direct investment in the protection of our forests, rivers, coasts and protected areas."
For her part, the Vice President of the Republic Raquel Peña supported the efforts made by the Ministry and described the Dignification Program of the National Park Ranger Corps as an act of justice with those who protect what belongs to all Dominicans. “It is a recognition of the commitment of those who have dedicated their efforts to protecting the natural resources that sustain our quality of life, our economy and our future,” said the vice president.
In turn, Henríquez recalled that since the beginning of his administration in 2024, work has been done to place park rangers at the center of the national conservation strategy, recognizing the fundamental role they play in the protection of areas that cover more than 25% of the national land territory and are part of the National System of Protected Areas. This effort contemplates the comprehensive strengthening of the park ranger corps through the delivery of 150 motorcycles, 1,500 uniforms, 300 communication radios and 75 cabinets for the safe storage of firearms.
Likewise, it includes the incorporation of 400 weapons acquired by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, intended to strengthen protection and surveillance work in protected areas. Added to this effort are 200 weapons delivered by the Ministry of Defense and another 100 by the Ministry of the Interior and Police, of which the first 25 units have already been received. Furthermore, for the first time in institutional history, park rangers will be provided with the corresponding licenses for the carrying and use of weapons in the exercise of their duties.
These actions are part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at expanding the response capacity of park rangers to the challenges facing the conservation of natural resources.
The combination of better working conditions, modern equipment and specialized training will allow us to have a more prepared, efficient and safe protection and surveillance force to protect protected areas and guarantee compliance with environmental regulations.
For the first time, the Ministry of the Environment has carried out a formal process for the acquisition of equipment for protection and surveillance personnel who provide service in our protected areas. This action responds to the need to strengthen the operational capabilities of those responsible for safeguarding the natural heritage of the Dominican Republic in the face of increasingly complex threats, guaranteeing that they can perform their functions in adequate conditions of security and compliance with the law.
In this sense, the minister noted that more important than the acquisition of this equipment is the institutional step towards the professionalization of personnel and highlighted that the Ministry has initiated a structured training and certification process for the servers who will be authorized to use this equipment, under strict standards of training, responsibility, security and respect for human rights. With this, the Ministry reaffirms its commitment that the protection of natural resources is carried out with properly trained personnel, under clear protocols and in accordance with the best management and surveillance practices of protected areas. More than a provision of equipment, this initiative represents a process that strengthens the State's capacity to protect the natural heritage of all Dominicans.
The announced investment constitutes one of the greatest efforts made by the Dominican State to strengthen this specialized body and represents a decisive step towards the modernization of environmental management, the effective protection of ecosystems and the conservation of natural resources for future generations.
With this initiative, the Ministry of the Environment seeks to build a more solid system of protected areas, supported by better prepared, equipped and valued public servants.

Más que una dotación de equipos, esta iniciativa representa un proceso que robustece la capacidad del Estado paraproteger el patrimonio naturalde todos los dominicanos.
