Words from the President of the Nation, Javier Milei, at the presentation ceremony of the F-16 Fleet in Río Cuarto, Córdoba
Good morning everyone. It is a great joy for me to be here today, in front of you and in front of all the Argentines who are following this broadcast from their homes. After an anxious wait, I finally have the first six F-16 fighter jets behind me. With this important investment in military weapons we are going to substantially strengthen our Air Force.
Our pilots made an impressive demonstration of their capabilities: in the period of time that I spent flying from Buenos Aires to Río Cuarto, the pilots left Río Cuarto, flew over the Casa Rosada and Plaza de Mayo, and returned to meet us here on this landing. Today, hundreds of thousands of Argentines were able to look up and see their protective angels flying through the sky for the first time. The F-16s are the new custodians of Argentine airspace.
Therefore, I am happy to tell all Argentines that today is a historic day for the country, because from today each and every one of us will be a little safer. And this incorporation is essential, because previous governments had left us defenseless.
Our Government, on the other hand, is determined to rectify decades of mistreatment towards our beloved Armed Forces, mistreatment that was motivated by ideological and partisan interests. Today we once again put the role of the defense of the homeland in the place it deserves.
I particularly want to thank Minister Petri for his tireless work to make all this possible, for the notable performance he had at the head of the Ministry in general and, in particular, for having materialized this purchase, which, without a doubt, is a historic milestone for our Armed Forces.
Minister Petri leaves his position to carry out an indispensable task in the Chamber of Deputies, but he leaves behind him an enormous legacy, of which these planes are his greatest testament.
The leadership of the Ministry of Defense will continue in excellent hands: this area will now pass to Lieutenant General Presti, a career military man. The appointment of Lieutenant General Presti as Minister of Defense was the cause of a media stir in recent days, fueled by a sector of politics that adopted a childish position. That is why I would like to stop here to make a brief mention of the issue.
In an effort to make political use of a national tragedy such as the last military dictatorship, in recent decades Kirchnerism dedicated itself to demonizing our Armed Forces and resenting the relationship between them and society. Now, protected by conjuring up the ghosts of the past, they reject the appointment of the Lieutenant General. But the appointment of the new minister is based on his suitability for the position, that is, we do not seek to put those who measure best on camera, but rather we look for those who know the most in the matter. And, logically, the person who knows the most about national defense is a military man.
On the other hand, his long career in the Army gives him moral integrity and a series of values that most politicians are unaware of. That is why the criticism is not surprising. That is to say, Lieutenant General Presti is a person willing to do what is right for the country, even when it is not personally convenient for him. He is a man of discipline, dedication and courage, with a lifetime of service. He is a man who swore to defend with his own life the land where he was born. Quite the opposite, to the politicians who criticize him, who understand little about sacrifice and dedication for the country; characters who always seek to do what represents personal benefits, no matter how incorrect they may be.
That is why we are not surprised that it is precisely those politicians from the lineage who oppose this designation and cry out loud talking about democratic setbacks. It is time to discuss again in our country the true meaning of the word sovereignty.
In our view, any country that intends to develop in a sustained manner must be able to be respected in the concert of nations. This is achieved in two ways: by having an economy that develops and grows with a thriving society, and also by having the ability to defend ourselves in order to deter other countries in a global context of growing uncertainty.
In other words, there is no sovereignty without economic prosperity and without military capabilities to defend that achieved prosperity. All this basic and self-evident reasoning was repudiated by Kirchnerism. During these 20 years they did diametrically opposites. They talked about sovereignty for decades, but they gave us a poor and defenseless country, defunded our armed forces and tried to demonize them in society to obtain political gain. If we refer to theirs, sovereignty for them means a large slum decorated with Argentine flags, and that is only because they do not have a consistent, productive economic vision capable of creating the future that all Argentines need. This theoretical and moral inability leads them to believe that the only possible sovereignty is that which is found in poverty, isolation and irrelevance.
We answer that the only way to obtain a sovereign country is by building wealth and building the capabilities to defend it. And this is not unattainable: we have already experienced it for just over 100 years. We now have the historical mandate to recover that path of greatness that we once walked.
And it is for all this that it is an honor to present these F-16 aircraft, which for us are a great step forward on this path of greatness. These planes are a symbol of the Argentina that we are building, a country that takes itself seriously and that intends to regain its deserved prominence in the concert of nations.
For all this, I want to thank all the members of the Executive Branch and the Air Force in charge of carrying out these efforts, and also the members of the forces in charge of making the F-16 program operational. Today more than ever we can say that the forces of heaven are accompanying us. So thank you very much, may God bless you all and may the forces of heaven be with us.

Es una gran alegría para mí estar hoy aquí, frente a ustedes y ante todos los argentinos que están siguiendo esta transmisión desde sus hogares.Después de una ansiosa espera, tengo finalmente detrás mío los primeros seis aviones de combate F-16. Con esta importante inversión en armamento militar vamos a robustecer sustancialmente nuestra Fuerza Aérea. Nuestros pilotos hicieron una demostración impresionante de sus capacidades: en el lapso de tiempo que yo pasé volando de Buenos Aires hacia Río Cuarto, los pilotos salieron de Río Cuarto, sobrevolaron la Casa Rosada y Plaza de Mayo, y retornaron para encontrarnos aquí en este aterrizaje. Hoy, cientos de miles de argentinos pudieron levantar la mirada y ver por primera vez sus ángeles protectores surcando el cielo. Los F-16 son los nuevos custodios del espacio aéreo argentino. Por eso, me alegra decirles a todos los argentinos que hoy es un día histórico para el país, porque a partir de hoy todos y cada uno de nosotros estará un poco más seguro. Y esta incorporación es fundamental, porque los gobiernos anteriores nos habían dejado indefensos. Nuestro Gobierno, en cambio, está decidido a rectificar décadas de destrato hacia nuestras queridas Fuerzas Armadas, destrato que fue motivado por intereses ideológicos y partidarios. Hoy volvemos a poner el rol de la defensa de la patria en el lugar que se merece. Quiero agradecer particularmente al Ministro Petri por su labor incansable para hacer todo esto posible, por el notable desempeño que tuvo al frente del Ministerio en general y, en especial, por haber materializado esta compra que, sin dudas, es un hito histórico para nuestras Fuerzas Armadas. El Ministro Petri deja su cargo para ir a cumplir una tarea indispensable en la Cámara de Diputados, pero deja detrás suyo un legado enorme, del cual estos aviones son su mayor testamento. La conducción del Ministerio de Defensa seguirá en excelentes manos: ahora esta área pasará al Teniente General Presti, un militar de carrera. La designación del Teniente General Presti como Ministro de Defensa fue motivo de revuelo mediático en los últimos días, fogoneado por un sector de la política que adoptó una posición infantil. Por eso me gustaría detenerme aquí para hacer una breve mención a la cuestión. En un esfuerzo por hacer usufructo político de una tragedia nacional como fue la última dictadura militar, en las últimas décadas el kirchnerismo se dedicó a demonizar a nuestras Fuerzas Armadas y a resentir la relación entre éstas y la sociedad. Ahora, amparados en conjurar los fantasmas del pasado, rechazan la designación del Teniente General. Pero la designación del nuevo ministro se basa en su idoneidad para el cargo, es decir, nosotros no buscamos poner a los que mejor miden en cámara, sino que buscamos a los que más saben en la materia. Y, lógicamente, quien más sabe de defensa nacional es un militar. Por otro lado, su larga trayectoria en el Ejército lo dota de una integridad moral y de una serie de valores que la mayoría de los políticos desconocen. Por eso no sorprende la crítica. Es decir, el Teniente General Presti es una persona dispuesta a hacer lo correcto por la Patria, incluso cuando no le sea personalmente conveniente. Es un hombre de disciplina, entrega y coraje, con toda una vida de servicio. Es un hombre que juró defender con su propia vida la tierra que lo vio nacer. Todo lo contrario, a los políticos que lo critican, que poco entienden de sacrificio y entrega por el país; personajes que siempre buscan hacer lo que les represente beneficios personales, por muy incorrectos que sean. Por eso no nos extraña que sean justamente esos políticos de estirpe quienes se oponen a esta designación y pongan el grito en el cielo hablando de retrocesos democráticos. Es hora de volver a discutir en nuestro país el verdadero significado de la palabra soberanía. Según nuestra mirada, cualquier país que pretenda desarrollarse de forma sostenida tiene que poder hacerse respetar en el concierto de las naciones. Esto se consigue por dos vías: teniendo una economía que se desarrolla y crece con una sociedad pujante, y también contando con la capacidad de defendernos para poder disuadir a otros países en un contexto global de creciente incertidumbre. Dicho de otro modo, no hay soberanía sin prosperidad económica y sin capacidades militares para defender esa prosperidad alcanzada. Todo este razonamiento básico y auto evidente fue repudiado por el kirchnerismo. Durante estos 20 años hicieron diametralmente los opuestos. Se llenaron la boca hablando de soberanía por décadas, pero nos entregaron un país pobre e indefenso, desfinanciaron a nuestras fuerzas armadas e intentaron demonizarlas ante la sociedad para obtener un rédito político. Si nos remitimos a los de ellos, soberanía para ellos significa una gran villa miseria decorada con banderines de Argentina, y eso tan solo porque no tienen una visión económica consistente, productiva y capaz de crear el futuro que todos los argentinos necesitan. Esa incapacidad teórica y moral los induce a creer que la única soberanía posible es la que se encuentra en la pobreza, la aislación y la irrelevancia. Nosotros les respondemos que la única forma de obtener un país soberano es construyendo riqueza y construyendo las capacidades para defenderla. Y esta no es inalcanzable: ya lo vivimos hace poco más de 100 años. Tenemos ahora el mandato histórico de recuperar aquella senda de grandeza que alguna vez transitamos. Y es por todo esto que es un honor presentar estos aviones F-16, que para nosotros son un gran paso adelante en este camino de grandeza. Estos aviones son un símbolo de la Argentina que estamos construyendo, un país que se toma en serio a sí mismo y que pretende recuperar su merecido protagonismo en el concierto de las naciones. Por todo esto, quiero agradecer a todos los integrantes del Poder Ejecutivo y de la Fuerza Aérea encargados de llevar adelante estas gestiones, y también los miembros de las fuerzas encargados de hacer operativo el programa de los F-16. Hoy más que nunca podemos decir que las fuerzas del cielo nos están acompañando. Así es que muchísimas gracias, que Dios los bendiga a todos y que las fuerzas del cielo nos acompañen.
