Ministerio de Medio Ambiente inaugura primera etapa de modernización del Jardín Botánico Nacional
Santo Domingo.-The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources presented the first stage of the comprehensive plan for modernization and institutional strengthening of the Dr. Rafael María Moscoso National Botanical Garden, an initiative aimed at renewing its facilities, improving the experience of visitors and strengthening its scientific, educational and operational capabilities.
Considered one of the most important conservation, scientific research and environmental education spaces in the Caribbean, the National Botanical Garden is a reference for Dominican natural heritage and a meeting point for students, researchers, families and national and international visitors.
During the event, headed by the minister, Paíno Henríquez, the interventions carried out as part of this first phase were announced, among which the comprehensive renovation of the main entrance, the rehabilitation of the emblematic domes, the construction of a new security and monitoring area, the adaptation of bathrooms with universal accessibility criteria and the enabling of a medical dispensary with a breastfeeding room stand out.
Likewise, the Japanese Garden and its traditional Tea House were restored, one of the spaces most appreciated by visitors to this important natural and scientific heritage of the country.
Minister Paíno Henríquez highlighted that the works respond to a vision of responsible conservation that seeks to prepare the Botanical Garden for the coming decades, without compromising the ecological and scientific values that distinguish it.
"The Botanical Garden is part of the memories of thousands of Dominicans. Here we have come to walk, to share with family, to learn about our biodiversity and to reconnect with nature. Therefore, each space that we recover represents much more than a physical improvement: it is an investment in well-being, in environmental education and in the quality of life of our people. Our commitment is to preserve this heritage so that present and future generations continue to enjoy a place that is part of all of us," said the official.
Henríquez pointed out that the project is developed under a fundamental principle: respecting the ecological, landscape and scientific integrity of the National Botanical Garden, an institution that is approaching the celebration of its 50 years of foundation. In this sense, he announced a second phase of support for the National Botanical Garden that will include the renovation of paths, service areas, dining rooms and warehouses, as well as a significant strengthening of its scientific infrastructure through the modernization of the Department of Botany, the National Herbarium and the Aquatic Plant Pavilion.
As part of this second stage, Environment will also promote the recovery of the Gran Cañada through the implementation of ozonation technology, an environmentally responsible solution that allows improving water quality without affecting the flora or fauna present in the area, complemented with an efficient solar lighting system.
The head of the Environment highlighted that the National Botanical Garden is one of the main references for conservation, research and environmental education in the Dominican Republic, so strengthening its capacities represents an investment in knowledge, sustainability and quality of life.
Henríquez explained that this intervention is part of a broader vision of strengthening the country's environmental infrastructure, aimed at modernizing strategic spaces for conservation, scientific research, environmental education and citizen service.
For his part, the director of the National Botanical Garden, Pedro Nolasco Suárez Espino, highlighted that "on the verge of celebrating 50 years of foundation, the National Botanical Garden is experiencing a historic stage. For decades this institution had not received such extensive and significant intervention as the one currently being carried out. This effort reflects the commitment to continue strengthening one of the most important spaces for the conservation of biodiversity, scientific research and environmental education in the Dominican Republic."
With these actions, the Ministry reaffirms its commitment to preserving the country's natural heritage and consolidating the National Botanical Garden as a regional reference space in biodiversity conservation, scientific research and environmental education.

Por eso, cada espacio que recuperamos representa mucho más que una mejora física: es una inversión en bienestar, en educación ambiental y en la calidad de vida de nuestra gente. Nuestro compromiso es preservar este patrimonio para que las presentes y futuras generaciones sigan disfrutando de un lugar que forma parte de todos nosotros”,expresó el funcionario. Henríquez señaló que el proyecto se desarrolla bajo un principio fundamental: respetar laintegridad ecológica, paisajística y científicadel Jardín Botánico Nacional, institución que se aproxima a la celebración de sus50 años de fundación. En ese sentido, anunció una segunda fase de apoyo al Jardín Botánico Nacional que incluirá la renovación de senderos, áreas de servicio, comedores y almacenes, así como un fortalecimiento significativo de su infraestructura científica mediante la modernización del Departamento de Botánica, el Herbario Nacional y el Pabellón de Plantas Acuáticas. Como parte de esta segunda etapa, Medio Ambiente también impulsará la recuperación de la Gran Cañada mediante la implementación de tecnología de ozonización, unasolución ambientalmente responsableque permite mejorar la calidad del agua sin afectar la flora ni la fauna presentes en el área, complementada con unsistema de iluminación solar eficiente. El titular de Medio Ambiente resaltó que el Jardín Botánico Nacional constituye uno de los principales referentes deconservación, investigación y educación ambientalde la República Dominicana, por lo que fortalecer sus capacidades representa una inversión enconocimiento, sostenibilidad y calidad de vida. Henríquez explicó que esta intervención forma parte de una visión más amplia de fortalecimiento de las infraestructuras ambientales del país, orientada amodernizar espacios estratégicospara la conservación, la investigación científica, la educación ambiental y la atención a la ciudadanía. De su parte, el director del Jardín Botánico Nacional,Pedro Nolasco Suárez Espino, resaltó que“a las puertas de cumplir 50 años de fundación, el Jardín Botánico Nacional vive una etapa histórica. Durante décadas esta institución no había recibido una intervención tan amplia y significativa como la que se está ejecutando actualmente. Este esfuerzo refleja el compromiso de seguir fortaleciendo uno de los espacios más importantes para la conservación de la biodiversidad, la investigación científica y la educación ambiental de la República Dominicana”. Con estas acciones, el Ministerio reafirma su compromiso de preservar el patrimonio natural del país y consolidar al Jardín Botánico Nacional como unespacio de referencia regionalen conservación de la biodiversidad, investigación científica y educación ambiental.
