Valorisation du sel iodé local : Le Bénin renforce la résilience des salicultrices à Djègbadji
The locality of Djègbadji, in the commune of Ouidah, hosted this Thursday, May 21, 2026, the inauguration ceremony of the local iodized salt production unit Xwlajè. Carried out as part of the Local Iodized Salt Promotion Project (ProSel), this modern infrastructure represents an investment of more than 600 million FCFA and marks an important step in the development of the salt industry in Benin. Supported by the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises and Employment Promotion, the project benefits from the technical and financial support of the IBSA Consortium (India–Brazil–South Africa) as well as the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). This cooperation illustrates the partners' desire to support Benin in initiatives that create jobs and wealth for local communities. The ceremony took place in the presence of several political-administrative authorities, notably Minister Modeste Tihounté KÉRÉKOU, the Mayor of Ouidah Christian Mawugnon HOUETCHENOU, the Resident Representative of UNDP, Titus OSUNDINA as well as representatives of the various member states of the Consortium IBSA. Local authorities, technical and financial partners, crowned heads and beneficiary populations also took part in this major event. ProSel aims to modernize the production of iodized salt in Benin while improving the working conditions of producers, particularly women's groups heavily involved in this activity. The inaugurated unit has modern processing, packaging and storage equipment meeting the health and quality standards required on the markets. The ceremony was marked by the symbolic cutting of the ribbon followed by a guided tour of the facilities. The guests were able to discover the different stages of iodized salt production, from extraction to final packaging. A demonstration space as well as a marketing stand for the Xwlajè label were also presented to the public. In their various interventions, the authorities and partners praised a structuring project capable of strengthening the local economy and promoting the employment of young people and women. With this new infrastructure, Djègbadji now asserts itself as a strategic hub for the production of iodized salt in Benin, a symbol of successful cooperation between the State, international partners and local communities.

La localité de Djègbadji, dans la commune de Ouidah, a accueilli ce jeudi 21 mai 2026 la cérémonie d’inauguration de l’unité de production de sel iodé local Xwlajè. Réalisée dans le cadre du Projet de Promotion du Sel Local Iodé (ProSel), cette infrastructure moderne représente un investissement de plus de 600 millions de FCFA et marque une étape importante dans la valorisation de la filière salicole au Bénin.Porté par le Ministère des Petites et Moyennes Entreprises et de la Promotion de l’Emploi, le projet bénéficie du soutien technique et financier du Consortium IBSA (Inde–Brésil–Afrique du Sud) ainsi que du Programme des Nations Unies pour le Développement (PNUD). Cette coopération illustre la volonté des partenaires d’accompagner le Bénin dans des initiatives créatrices d’emplois et de richesses pour les communautés locales.La cérémonie s’est déroulée en présence de plusieurs autorités politico-administratives, notamment leMinistre Modeste Tihounté KÉRÉKOU, le Maire de Ouidah Christian Mawugnon HOUETCHENOU, le Représentant résident du PNUD, Titus OSUNDINA ainsi que les représentants des différents Etats membres du Consortium IBSA. Autorités locales, Partenaires techniques et financiers, Têtes couronnées et populations bénéficiaires ont également pris part à cet évènement majeur.Le ProSel vise à moderniser la production de sel iodé au Bénin tout en améliorant les conditions de travail des producteurs, particulièrement des groupements de femmes fortement impliqués dans cette activité. L’unité inaugurée dispose d’équipements modernes de transformation, de conditionnement et de stockage répondant aux normes sanitaires et de qualité exigées sur les marchés.La cérémonie a été marquée par la coupure symbolique du ruban suivie d’une visite guidée des installations. Les invités ont pu découvrir les différentes étapes de production du sel iodé, de l’extraction jusqu’au conditionnement final. Un espace de démonstration ainsi qu’un stand de commercialisation du label Xwlajè ont également été présentés au public.Dans leurs différentes interventions, les autorités et partenaires ont salué un projet structurant capable de renforcer l’économie locale et de promouvoir l’emploi des jeunes et des femmes. Avec cette nouvelle infrastructure, Djègbadji s’affirme désormais comme un pôle stratégique de production de sel iodé au Bénin, symbole d’une coopération réussie entre l’État, les partenaires internationaux et les communautés locales.
