Written Statement by the Government Spokesman of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Konstantinos Letymbiotis, on the conclusion of the 5th Cyprus-Greece-Jordan Trilateral Summit

The proceedings of the 5th Cyprus-Greece-Jordan Trilateral Summit were concluded today in Amman, with the participation of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, His Majesty King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic, Mr Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The Summit took place at a time when the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East are at the epicentre of geopolitical developments with direct implications for regional security, energy, migration, maritime routes, economic resilience and the overall stability of the region.

Against this backdrop, the Summit assumes particular political importance. It reaffirms that stability requires deeper multilateral cooperation, long-standing trusted partnerships, continuous coordination and practical cooperation among countries that share a common outlook on security, peace and respect for international law.

During the proceedings, a review was conducted of the implementation of the trilateral cooperation to date, while ways for its further practical deepening were discussed, with the aim of achieving more tangible results.

Emphasis was also particularly placed on relations between the European Union (EU) and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, following the Informal European Council, recently hosted in Cyprus, with the participation of regional leaders, including Jordan.

The Republic of Cyprus, as the EU member state geographically closest to Jordan and the wider region, will continue to actively support the further strengthening of cooperation with Jordan at bilateral, trilateral and European levels. The Republic of Cyprus remains a consistent advocate for the upgrading of EU–Jordan relations and for the full and effective implementation of the EU–Jordan Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership.

The leaders also exchanged views on current regional developments, with a particular focus on Iran, Gaza, the West Bank, Jerusalem, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq. They underlined the urgent need for de-escalation, for preventing further spillover of the crisis, and for creating the conditions necessary for lasting peace and stability in the region and beyond.

In the context of the Summit, the importance of civil protection and regional preparedness was also highlighted. In this regard, the Cyprus Regional Aerial Firefighting Station (CRAFS) was referenced as a tangible example of cooperation with real regional value. This constitutes a significant development originating from the implementation of a joint Cyprus–Jordan initiative, as the establishment of the Regional Firefighting Centre was discussed at the highest political level during the first bilateral visit of the President of Republic of Cyprus to Jordan in August 2023, following which a joint letter was sent by the Foreign Ministers of both countries to the EU.

At the same time, the prospect of strengthening strategic connectivity in the region was discussed, including the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), as well as the inclusion of this topic within the framework of Cyprus–Greece–Jordan trilateral cooperation. The three countries form a natural geopolitical and geographical axis linking the Middle East with Europe via the Eastern Mediterranean, offering multiple benefits for the implementation and strategic integration of the corridor.

The Summit reaffirmed the shared commitment of Cyprus, Greece and Jordan to promoting lasting peace, security and stability in the region and beyond. It also highlighted the potential of trilateral cooperation to serve as a platform for coordination, European connectivity and practical action, at a time when the region requires greater reliability, preparedness and cooperation.

A Joint Declaration was adopted at the conclusion of the Summit, reflecting the key principles and priorities discussed during the meeting.
