The President of the Republic of Cyprus departs for the United Arab Emirates

Written Statement by the Government Spokesman of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Konstantinos Letymbiotis

Following the conclusion of the Trilateral Summit between the Republic of Cyprus, the Hellenic Republic and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, held in Aman, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, is travelling to Abu Dhabi, where he will hold a meeting with the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The visit constitutes a tangible expression of solidarity by the Republic of Cyprus with the UAE in light of the unjustified attacks it has faced, and reaffirms Cyprus’ support for the security, stability and sovereignty of a strategic partner.

During the meeting, discussions are expected to focus on broader regional developments, at a particularly critical juncture for the security and stability of both the country and the wider Gulf region.

The escalation of the crisis has highlighted the need for closer coordination between the Republic of Cyprus and the countries of the region, with a view of of de-escalating tensions and safeguarding regional security.

President Christodoulides’ visit to the UAE confirms that the strategic partnership between Cyprus and the UAE remains strong, meaningful and unaffected by regional developments. At a time of heightened instability, the Republic of Cyprus maintains open channels of communication, strengthens coordination with countries of the Middle East and the Gulf and continues efforts aimed at preventing a wider escalation and promoting de-escalation.

Since assuming the Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), the Republic of Cyprus has set as a key priority the deepening of EU cooperation with countries in the wider region. In this context, it has consistently emphasised that the security of Europe and the stability of the Gulf are interconnected, with direct implications for energy, trade, maritime navigation and overall regional security.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus will be joined by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, Dr Constantinos Kombos, the Government Spokesman of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Konstantinos Letymbiotis, the Deputy Minister for European Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, Ms Marilena Raouna, the Director of the President’s Diplomatic Office, Mr Doros Venezis, and other officials.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus will return to Cyprus tomorrow.
