Tocopilla, June 8, 2026.-The President of the Republic, José Antonio Kast, led this Monday the inauguration of the Tocopilla Energy Complex of ENGIE Chile, one of the most important energy reconversion initiatives developed in the country and that transforms a historic coal-fired generation pole into a modern platform for clean, flexible and resilient energy infrastructure. The activity included the participation of the Minister of Energy, Ximena Rincón; the Minister of National Assets, Catalina Parot; the Minister of Sciences, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation, Ximena Lincolao; the regional presidential delegate, Katherine López; the regional governor, Ricardo Díaz; the mayor of Tocopilla, Ljubica Kurtovic, as well as parliamentarians, regional councillors, councilors and company representatives. The new complex integrates three complementary technologies that strengthen the security and stability of the National Electrical System: the BESS Tocopilla storage system, a Synchronous Condenser and Natural Gas Combined Cycle Unit 16, considered one of the most efficient plants in the Chilean electrical grid. The BESS Tocopilla system constitutes the main component of the new infrastructure, with an installed capacity of 116 MW and 660 MWh. Thanks to its 240 lithium-ion battery containers, it can store renewable energy in periods of high generation and reinject it when the system requires it, contributing to a more efficient and sustainable operation. Its annual contribution is equivalent to 211 GWh of energy, enough to supply nearly 89,900 homes, in addition to avoiding the emission of more than 51 thousand tons of carbon dioxide per year. Along with this, the Synchronous Condenser installed in the complex becomes the first of its kind in Chile and in the entire ENGIE Group worldwide. This infrastructure provides essential services for the stability of the electrical grid, providing inertia, dynamic voltage control, reactive power and support in the event of contingencies, facilitating greater integration of renewable energies into the system and reducing the need to operate thermal power plants for safety reasons.
