Presidente Peña encabeza acto de inicio del monumento a la Virgen de la Asunción
The initiative is developed jointly by the Presidency of the Republic, the Municipality of Asunción, the Ministry of Education and Sciences, the Ministry of Public Works and Communications, the National Secretariat of Culture and the Apostolic Nunciature, with the purpose of paying tribute to the patron saint of Paraguay and strengthening the appreciation of the historical, cultural and spiritual heritage linked to the origins of the country's capital.
The image will be made of bronze, will be approximately 3.5 meters high and will sit on a structure of around 6.5 meters, designed to highlight the sculpture and preserve the view of the main heritage buildings in the sector.
President Peña highlighted the deep connection between the history of Paraguay and the figure of the Virgin of the Assumption, recalling that it was under her patronage that the city was founded in 1537. He noted that the monument represents a recognition of the roots that gave rise to the nation and a tribute long awaited by generations of Paraguayans.
The head of state highlighted the role played by the Catholic Church in the construction of essential values for social coexistence. In this context, he reaffirmed the will to consolidate a permanent working relationship between the Government of Paraguay and the Church, aimed at strengthening communities and serving citizens.
The president also recalled that the Government promotes various actions for the preservation of the national religious heritage, including the comprehensive rehabilitation of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Asunción and the restoration of the San Blas Cathedral in Ciudad del Este, in addition to interventions in historical temples through programs supported by Itaipú.
A monument to honor the patron saint of Paraguay
For his part, Cardinal Adalberto Martínez Flores blessed the place and offered a prayer for national unity, highlighting the historical role of the Virgin of the Assumption as a symbol of service to the Paraguayan people.
During the technical presentation of the work, engineer Roque Ardissone explained that the project was born at the initiative of Cardinal Adalberto Martínez and that it has been developing for more than a year. He pointed out that the design seeks to highlight the figure of the Virgin without altering the visual of the historical environment where it will be installed.
Ardissone also reported that the artistic work was created by the renowned Paraguayan artist Ingrid Seall, currently a participant in the Venice Biennale, while the metal structure will be in charge of a specialized national company.
The inauguration of the monument is scheduled for next August 15, the date on which Asunción will celebrate a new founding anniversary and the festival of its patron saint.

El mandatario también recordó que el Gobierno impulsa diversas acciones para la preservación del patrimonio religioso nacional, entre ellas la rehabilitación integral de la Catedral Metropolitana de Asunción y la restauración de la Catedral San Blas de Ciudad del Este, además de intervenciones en templos históricos a través de programas respaldados por Itaipú. Señaló que el diseño busca resaltar la figura de la Virgen sin alterar la visual del entorno histórico donde será instalada. Ardissone informó además que la obra artística fue creada por la reconocida artista paraguayaIngrid Seall, actualmente participante de la Bienal de Venecia, mientras que la estructura metálica estará a cargo de una empresa nacional especializada. La inauguración del monumento está prevista para el próximo15 de agosto, fecha en que Asunción celebrará un nuevo aniversario fundacional y la festividad de su santa patrona.
