Presidente Mulino se reúne con armadores griegos para impulsar las ventajas que ofrece el Registro de Naves de Panamá
Some 500 Greek-owned ships use the Panamanian flag for navigation and international maritime trade.
The President of the Republic, José Raúl Mulino, held a meeting with the community of Greek shipowners and the high-level maritime sector, to whom he presented the plan promoted by Panama to increase the value of its flag as a Ship Registry. This will allow it to attract more clients and position itself as one of the largest competitors in the flagging of ships.
Mulino highlighted the importance of his work tour to Greece, considering that this conglomerate represents about 500 ships on the Panamanian flag and in the transport of the world's cargo a percentage greater than 20%.
Mulino began his work agenda this Monday and took stock of these three days this Wednesday: "I had a visit in the official area with the President of Greece and the Prime Minister, with whom we addressed the international geopolitical situation and the problems of the maritime sector. We also expressed Panama's desire to unify criteria for more effective maritime and commercial collaboration."
The Panamanian president maintained that the meeting with the maritime industrial sector of Greece was important to answer questions related to the situation of Panamanian ships in China. “We have committed ourselves—starting from the meeting held by the foreign ministers of China and Panama—to implement proactive mechanisms to solve this problem.”
During the meeting with a significant group of the shipowner community, the Minister of the Canal, José Ramón Icaza, and the director of Merchant Marine of the Maritime Authority of Panama, Ramón Franco explained the actions in the shipping registry and the projects developed by the National Government and the Panama Canal.
Icaza referred to the modernization projects announced by the Tocumen International Airport, S.A., the new port concessions presented by the Maritime Authority of Panama (AMP), the rehabilitation plan for the Pan-American Highway and the Fourth Bridge, projects executed by the MOP. In addition, the strategic projects promoted by the Panama Canal Authority, including the Indio River lake and the extension of the logistics corridor that connects the Centennial Bridge with the Atlantic Bridge.
For his part, director Franco referred to the future of sustainable efficiency, regulations, current challenges and why choose the Registry in Panama.
Also participating in the program were the ambassador of Panama in Greece, Julie Lymberópulos; the chancellor, Javier Martínez-Acha; and the AMP administrator. They were accompanied by Julio Moltó, Minister of Commerce and Industries; Rafael Bárcenas, director of Civil Aeronautics; Kristel Getzler, Secretary of Economic Affairs and Competitiveness of the Ministry of the Presidency; Alberto Vallarino, former Minister of Economy and Finance; Alberto Alemán Zubieta, former administrator of the Panama Canal; and Aurelio Barría, president of the Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama.
For this Thursday, the president will hold various meetings with shipping businessmen and will participate in a reception with the international maritime community, senior officials of the Hellenic Government and the private sector, in order to continue strengthening Panama as an international maritime and logistics leader.

Unos 500 barcos de propietarios griegos utilizan la bandera panameña para su navegación y el comercio marítimo internacional. El presidente de la República, José Raúl Mulino, sostuvo un encuentro con la comunidad de armadores griegos y el sector marítimo de alto nivel, ante quienes expuso el plan que impulsa Panamá para aumentar el valor de su bandera como Registro de Naves. Ello permitirá captar más clientes y posesionarse como uno de los mayores competidores en el abanderamiento de naves. Mulino destacó la importancia de su gira de trabajo a Grecia, considerando que este conglomerado representa en la bandera panameña unos 500 barcos y en el transporte de la carga del mundo un porcentaje superior al 20%. Mulino inició su agenda de trabajo este lunes e hizo un balance este miércoles de estos tres días: “He tenido una visita en el área oficial con el Presidente de Grecia y con el Primer Ministro, con quienes abordamos la situación geopolítica internacional y los problemas del sector marítimo. También expusimos el deseo de Panamá de unificar criterios para una colaboración marítima y comercial más efectiva”. El mandatario panameño sostuvo que fue importante la reunión con el sector industrial marítimo de Grecia para responder preguntas relativas a la situación de los barcos panameños en China. “Nos hemos comprometido —a partir de la reunión que sostuvieron los cancilleres de China y Panamá— a llevar mecanismos proactivos para ir solucionando este problema”. Durante la reunión con un grupo significativo de la comunidad de armadores, el ministro del Canal, José Ramón Icaza, y el director de Marina Mercante de la Autoridad Marítima de Panamá, Ramón Franco explicaron las acciones en el registro naviero y los proyectos que desarrollan el Gobierno Nacional y el Canal de Panamá. Icaza se refirió a los proyectos de modernización anunciados por el Aeropuerto Internacional de Tocumen, S.A., las nuevas concesiones portuarias presentadas por la Autoridad Marítima de Panamá (AMP), el plan de rehabilitación de la carretera Panamericana y el Cuarto Puente, proyectos que ejecuta el MOP. Además, los proyectos estratégicos que impulsa la Autoridad del Canal de Panamá, entre ellos el lago del Río Indio y la extensión del corredor logístico que conecta el Puente Centenario con el Puente Atlántico. Por su parte, el director Franco se refirió al futuro de la eficiencia sostenible, regulaciones, los actuales desafíos y por qué elegir el Registro en Panamá. Dentro del programa también intervinieron la embajadora de Panamá en Grecia, Julie Lymberópulos; el canciller, Javier Martínez-Acha; y el administrador de la AMP. Los acompañaron Julio Moltó, ministro de Comercio e Industrias; Rafael Bárcenas, director de Aeronáutica Civil; Kristel Getzler, secretaria de Asuntos Económicos y Competitividad del Ministerio de la Presidencia; Alberto Vallarino, exministro de Economía y Finanzas; Alberto Alemán Zubieta, exadministrador del Canal de Panamá; y Aurelio Barría, presidente de la Cámara de Comercio, Industrias y Agricultura de Panamá. Para este jueves, el presidente sostendrá diversas reuniones con empresarios navieros y participará en una recepción con la comunidad marítima internacional, altos funcionarios del Gobierno helénico y del sector privado, con el fin de continuar fortaleciendo a Panamá como líder marítimo y logístico internacional.
