Mulino: “Reafirmamos la relación con Grecia y protegeremos nuestra bandera”
The President of the Republic, José Raúl Mulino, stated this Thursday that, thanks to the state visit to Greece and all the meetings held with various sectors of the maritime area, "the country regained the trust of the main European user of the Panamanian flag."
In his speech before business representatives and the Governments of Greece, Cyprus and other nations, Mulino stressed "the importance for the Panamanian economy of taking care of our commercial partners, which are the largest merchant marine in the world."
“The risk of losing Greece would negatively impact the image of the country and its economy,” said President Mulino before more than a thousand people who participated in a reception attended by Panamanian businessmen present at Posidonia 2026, the main maritime fair in the world.
The president stated that “the problems with China will be resolved and we will take care of the interests of the country and the ships flying our flag, not supporting changes in the rules of the game on maritime issues that harm the country.”
Likewise, he assured that he closely follows the management of his government in Panama through direct communication with all his ministers.
This Thursday, the president visited the Consulate General of Panama in Piraeus, where he held a meeting and referred to the reinforcement of Panama's strategies to raise the quality of its Ship Registry - including the application of new technologies - and the search for solutions to external situations that affect Panamanian-flagged vessels. President Mulino assured that he seeks to guarantee more expeditious attention to current and future clients, considering that Greece has one of the largest fleets in the world and, today, close to 500 Greek ships sail under the Panamanian flag. At the meeting—in which the chancellor, Javier Martínez-Acha, participated; Julie Lymberópulos, ambassador and consul of Panama in Greece; Luis Roquebert and Ramón Franco, general director and director of the Merchant Marine of the Maritime Authority of Panama, as well as representatives of the Department of Seafarers and Segumar Operations, discussed the maintenance and competitiveness of the Panamanian flag, strategies to attract new investments through the flagging of ships and the improvement of the position in the Greek market.
Regarding the situations that affect Panamanian vessels, the need to evaluate at the highest level in Panama various options to avoid the retention of vessels in China was mentioned, a factor that impacts the competitiveness of the Ship Registry and the ships that already sail under the Panamanian flag.
Mulino attended accompanied by the first lady, Maricel de Mulino; as well as Alberto Alemán Zubieta, former administrator of the Panama Canal; Alberto Vallarino, former Minister of Economy and Finance; and Aurelio Barría, president of the Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama.

De igual forma, aseguró que sigue de cerca la gestión de su gobierno en Panamá mediante comunicación directa con todos sus ministros. Este jueves, el mandatario visitó el Consulado General de Panamá en El Pireo, donde sostuvo una reunión y se refirió al reforzamiento de las estrategias de Panamá para elevar la calidad de su Registro de Naves —incluyendo la aplicación de nuevas tecnologías— y la búsqueda de soluciones a situaciones externas que afectan a los buques con bandera panameña.El presidente Mulino aseguró que se busca garantizar una atención más expedita a los actuales y futuros clientes, considerando que Grecia posee una de las flotas más grandes del mundo y, hoy por hoy, cerca de 500 barcos griegos navegan bajo la bandera panameña.En la reunión —en la que participaron el canciller, Javier Martínez-Acha; Julie Lymberópulos, embajadora y cónsul de Panamá en Grecia; Luis Roquebert y Ramón Franco, director general y director de la Marina Mercante de la Autoridad Marítima de Panamá, así como representantes del Departamento de Operaciones de Gente de Mar y Segumar— se trató el sostenimiento y la competitividad de la bandera panameña, estrategias para atraer nuevas inversiones a través del abanderamiento de buques y el mejoramiento de la posición en el mercado griego. Respecto a las situaciones que afectan a las embarcaciones panameñas, se mencionó la necesidad de evaluar al más alto nivel en Panamá diversas opciones para evitar la retención de buques en China, un factor que impacta en la competitividad del Registro de Naves y a las naves que ya navegan con bandera panameña.
