Programa para la Detección Oportuna de Cáncer de Próstata impacta a más de 38,000 hombres
Santo Domingo.-The Program for the Timely Detection of Breast, Cervical and Prostate Cancer has assisted 38,282 men in the prostate area, since its implementation, in May 2021, until May of this year.
The initiative, led by the first lady Raquel Arbaje, together with the National Health Service (SNS), aims to promote the early detection of prostate cancer through conferences held in different provinces of the country, specialized consultations in prioritized hospitals and the performance of timely diagnostic studies.
Of the patients treated, 16,983 received assistance in the ten hospitals prioritized by the program, while 21,299 men were screened through the sessions held in the different provinces of the country. Likewise, 32,052 Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) tests were performed and 5,335 patients with clinically relevant findings were identified.
Likewise, 853 patients remain under medical follow-up with suspicion of prostate cancer, 276 have undergone biopsies and 92 were diagnosed with the disease, which has allowed their referral and timely treatment in hospitals of the Public Health Services Network.
The executive director of the SNS, Dr. Julio Landrón, highlighted the importance of continuing to strengthen preventive and early detection actions to reduce the impact of this disease in the male population.
“Together with First Lady Raquel Arbaje, we continue to promote strategies that allow men to access evaluations and diagnoses in a timely manner, because identifying prostate cancer in time allows us to provide early care, better treatment opportunities and a better quality of life for patients,” said Landrón.
Hospital network with national coverage
The prioritized hospitals in Greater Santo Domingo include the Rosa Emilia Sánchez Pérez de Tavares National Cancer Institute (Incart), the Salvador B. Gautier Hospital, the Francisco Moscoso Puello and the Francisco Vicente Castro Sandoval (Boca Chica). In the interior of the country, the program operates at the Juan Pablo Pina Hospital (San Cristóbal), at the Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia (La Altagracia), at the Presidente Estrella Ureña (Santiago), at the Morillo King (La Vega) and at the Jaime Mota (Barahona).
The SNS reiterated its commitment to continue strengthening prevention and early detection strategies for prostate cancer, promoting a culture of timely screening and equitable access to quality health services for the entire male population.
World Prostate Cancer Day: It is commemorated every June 11 in order to raise awareness among the male population about the importance of early diagnosis of prostate cancer and the application of the respective treatment.
