ETED fortalece la red nacional con nuevas inversiones y soluciones de almacenamiento para mejorar la confiabilidad del sistema
Santo Domingo.-The Dominican Electric Transmission Company (ETED) is advancing a comprehensive strategy to strengthen the reliability of the National Interconnected Electric System (SENI), through investments exceeding RD 22,000 million in transmission infrastructure, the incorporation of new technologies and the development of energy storage solutions that will provide greater operational flexibility to the national network.
This was stated by the executive vice president of the ETED, Alfonso Rodríguez Tejada, during his participation in the panel “Reliability and Sustainability: Building the Dominican Electrical System of the Future”, organized by Mercado magazine.
The event also featured the participation of the Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos; the executive director of the National Energy Commission (CNE), Edward Veras, and the general administrator of the Dominican Hydroelectric Generation Company (Egehid), Rafael Salazar.
During his speech, Rodríguez Tejada highlighted that the company's strategic planning has evolved to respond to an increasingly diverse energy matrix, with a growing participation of renewable sources such as solar and wind energy. "The transmission company cannot continue with the rigid method that the plants have to be installed as far as the lines go. We have to take the lines to where the resource is," he stated.
Among the projects with the greatest impact, the executive highlighted the transmission line that will connect Río San Juan, Puerto Plata and Santiago, whose commissioning is scheduled for November of this year. Likewise, he mentioned the expansion of the 345 kilovolt line from Punta Catalina, as well as important developments in the Eastern region and in the deep south of the country, including new infrastructure that will extend network coverage to the Elías Piña province.
Rodríguez Tejada also reported that the ETED is promoting an initiative to incorporate into the national electrical system at least 600 megawatts of energy storage capacity for two hours, equivalent to 1,200 megawatt-hours, through private sector investments covered by the provisions of the General Electricity Law 125-01.
He explained that this proposal will allow these infrastructures to be recognized as assets associated with the transmission system, facilitating its development and contributing to providing greater operational flexibility to the national electrical grid.
The initiative has a favorable opinion from the Superintendency of Electricity, the support of the Ministry of Energy and Mines and letters of intent from the main investment blocks in the sector, which will allow progress towards the final phase of contract negotiation. "We hope to be signing these contracts no later than August of this year. This deployment will significantly reduce the discharge of renewable energy, strengthen the stability of the system and improve the response capacity of the network to the challenges posed by the energy transition," he indicated.
The executive vice president pointed out that the implementation of these storage systems could be completed in an estimated period of nine to twelve months, strengthening the resilience and reliability of the National Interconnected Electrical System.
In addition, he highlighted that the ETED continues to incorporate advanced software and artificial intelligence tools to optimize the operation of the network and facilitate the efficient integration of new renewable generation sources.
Rodríguez Tejada stressed that the combination of infrastructure, technology, energy storage and strategic planning will allow the country to have a more robust, flexible and prepared transmission network to accompany the growth of electricity demand and the sustainable development of the Dominican Republic.

Rodríguez Tejada también informó que la ETED impulsa una iniciativa para incorporar al sistema eléctrico nacional al menos600 megavatiosde capacidad de almacenamiento energético durante dos horas, equivalente a1,200 megavatios-hora, mediante inversiones del sector privado amparadas en las disposiciones de laLey General de Electricidad 125-01. Explicó que esta propuesta permitirá reconocer estas infraestructuras como activos asociados al sistema de transmisión, facilitando su desarrollo y contribuyendo a dotar demayor flexibilidad operativaa la red eléctrica nacional. La iniciativa cuenta con opinión favorable de laSuperintendencia de Electricidad, el respaldo delMinisterio de Energía y Minasy cartas de intención de los principales bloques de inversión del sector, lo que permitirá avanzar hacia la fase final de negociación de los contratos. “Esperamos estar firmando estos contratos a más tardar en agosto de este año. Este despliegue permitirá reducir significativamente el vertimiento de energía renovable, fortalecer la estabilidad del sistema y mejorar la capacidad de respuesta de la red ante los retos que plantea la transición energética”,indicó.
