Aumento en llegadas de turistas al país contribuye en la mejora de las cifras de empleo

Wednesday, August 21, 2024. With 239,368 visitors who arrived by air,
July stands out as an exceptional month for tourism in Costa Rica. The figure
represents an increase of 7.2% compared to last year. This increase positions
July 2024 as the most outstanding in recent years compared to July
from previous years in the visitation records.
Of the 239,368 tourists, 162,543 entered through the Juan International Airport
Santamaría, which represents 68% of the total figure, with a growth of 2.3% in
comparison with July 2023. On the other hand, 76,779 tourists arrived through
Daniel Oduber International Airport, which is equivalent to 31.9% of the total, marking
an increase of 19.4% compared to the same period last year.
Simultaneously, 15,253 jobs were created from the first to the second quarter of the year
ongoing, increasing from 172,545 people working in activities in the sector to
187,798. Both quarters exceed their equivalents in 2019 -before the
pandemic- and 2023, according to data from the Continuous Employment Survey (ECE)
prepared by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC).

foreign exchange they are generating, there is no doubt that the Costa Rican tourism sector is
living an exceptional moment, with records in both visitation and income.

The positive figures have stood out throughout the year. The accumulated of January and
July of this year by air amounts to 1,771,811 tourists, an increase
13.5% compared to the same period in 2023. Broken down by port
entrance, they entered through the Juan Santamaría International Airport 1 156 835
tourists, and by the Daniel Oduber International Airport, in Guanacaste, 614 602
for an increase of 8.2% and 24.9% respectively. From North America, an area that represents 75% of the total tourists that visit us
visit, there was a 16.9% increase in admission compared to the first seven
months of 2023. 1,329,164 tourists arrived by air, broken down by this
form: United States 1,100,571 tourists; Canada 174,679 and Mexico 53,914, all
figures higher than the previous year from these three markets.

in the first seven months of 2024 compared to the same period of the
2023: France 49,007 tourists (increased 8.7%); Germany 45,745 tourists
(increased 3.1%) and the United Kingdom 45,312 tourists (4.6% more). We also received 4.6%
more Spaniards (29,251) and Dutch (21,330).
Thanks to tourist visitation and the strength of the destination, between January and March of this
year, the most recent figure available, foreign exchange income from tourism was US$
1780 million, according to the statistics of the Central Bank of Costa Rica, representing
this amount, in just the first quarter of the year, a third of the foreign exchange
received last year (US$4,751 million).

Desglosado por puerto entrada, ingresaron por el Aeropuerto Internacional Juan Santamaría 1 156 835 turistas, y por el Aeropuerto Internacional Daniel Oduber, en Guanacaste, 614 602 para un aumento del 8,2% y 24,9% respectivamente.Desde América del Norte, zona que representa el 75% del total de turistas que nos visitan, hubo un aumento del 16,9% en el ingreso comparado con los primeros siete meses del 2023. Llegaron 1 329 164 turistas por la vía aérea desglosado de esta forma: Estados Unidos 1 100 571 turistas; Canadá 174 679 y México 53 914, todas cifras superiores al año anterior desde estos tres mercados. El crecimiento en las cifras turísticas de enero a julio desde Europa tuvo una variación positiva de 2,8% con respecto al mismo periodo del 2023, para un total de Los principales mercados emisores europeos mostraron el siguiente comportamiento en los primeros siete meses del 2024 comparado con el mismo lapso del 2023: Francia 49 007 personas turistas (aumentó 8,7%); Alemania 45 745 turistas (aumentó 3,1%) y Reino Unido 45 312 turistas (4,6% más). También recibimos 4,6% más españoles (29 251 ) y neerlandeses (21 330). Gracias a la visitación turística y a la solidez del destino, entre enero y marzo de este año, la cifra más reciente disponible, el ingreso por divisas del turismo fue de US $ 1780 millones, según las estadísticas del Banco Central de Costa Rica, representando este monto, en tan solo el primer trimestre del año, una tercera parte de las divisas recibidas el año pasado (US $ 4751 millones).
